Community surveillance remains one of the most important foundations of the Ebola response.
The latest DRC situation shows why. WHO reports that the outbreak continues to evolve differently across provinces, with recent declines in some major transmission areas occurring alongside continued transmission and geographic expansion elsewhere.
Development Alert continues promoting community awareness so that unusual illness is communicated quickly through appropriate channels.
Community members are often closest to households, schools, markets, transport routes and other settings where health concerns may first become visible.
Our role is to strengthen awareness and encourage communities to cooperate with trained surveillance and response teams.
We also emphasize that community surveillance is not a substitute for laboratory confirmation or professional medical assessment.
Instead, it provides an early-warning bridge between communities and formal health systems.
When communities know what to report and whom to contact, valuable time can be saved.
