Dear Donor,
The expansion of Ebola into Dungu Health Zone in Haut-Uélé, an area bordering South Sudan, has added another dimension to the regional preparedness challenge.
WHO reports that the DRC outbreak now affects 63 health zones across seven provinces.
For Development Alert, this reinforces the importance of maintaining preparedness among communities that interact with neighboring countries.
Our work emphasizes responsible health information, early reporting, hygiene and cooperation with health authorities.
Border communities often have strong social and economic connections extending across national boundaries. These relationships are essential to livelihoods, but they also make communication and surveillance particularly important during infectious-disease emergencies.
We therefore promote preparedness without stigmatizing travelers, traders or communities from affected areas.
People should be encouraged to report concerning symptoms and seek qualified medical assistance rather than hide illness because of fear or discrimination.
Preparedness should protect both public health and human dignity.
