Safe Transportation of Suspected Ebola Patients

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

As Uganda continues responding to the Ebola outbreak, with confirmed cases now standing at 20, one of the most important interventions is ensuring that suspected patients are transported safely and quickly to designated treatment facilities. Your generous support is helping strengthen referral systems that reduce delays while protecting healthcare workers, caregivers, and the public from unnecessary exposure.

Response teams continue working closely with district health authorities, ambulance services, and community leaders to ensure suspected cases are transported using approved infection prevention procedures. Ambulance crews are being supported with ongoing refresher training on patient handling, disinfection procedures, and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Communication between village health teams, local clinics, and referral hospitals has also improved, enabling faster coordination whenever alerts are received.

Communities are increasingly aware of the importance of avoiding the transport of suspected patients using public vehicles or private motorcycles. Instead, they are encouraged to immediately notify local health authorities so trained emergency teams can respond safely.

These improvements are helping reduce the risk of transmission during patient movement while ensuring individuals receive specialized care without delay. Every safe referral protects families, transport workers, and healthcare providers while strengthening overall outbreak control.

Your continued support is making it possible to maintain efficient emergency transport systems that save lives and reduce community transmission. Together, we are ensuring that every suspected case receives timely, dignified, and safe access to medical care.
