GlobalGiving respects your privacy. We collect information to provide services to you, update you on the impact of your contributions, and communicate about promotions or special services. GlobalGiving recognizes that we must maintain and use your information responsibly.

Privacy Policy Overview

GlobalGiving maintains a variety of websites (including https://www.globalgiving.org/) and provides its services in relation to donations, both online and offline (altogether, the “Services”), as well as interactions with you. The Privacy Policy below applies to visitors to our Services, donors, individuals working for our non-profit and corporate partners, suppliers and job applicants (altogether, “you”) and governs how we handle personal information in connection with Services and our interactions with you. This Privacy Policy describes what personal information we collect, how we use it, and your choices.

We collect information from you when you visit and take actions on our Services. We use this information to provide and manage our Services. We use cookies and similar technologies to provide a better experience, improve our website track usage patterns and conduct marketing.

You can access your data, edit your preferences, download your data, request deletion of your data, or revoke consent by visiting your account. Except for the purposes outlined below, we will not trade, share, or sell your personal information with anyone. Refer to the Privacy Policy below for complete details.

If you are based in the United Kingdom, Switzerland or the European Economic Area, we will transfer your personal information to the United States pursuant to approved standard contractual clauses for personal data transfer to third countries.

GlobalGiving Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization (EIN: 30-0108263) based in District of Columbia, United States, and GlobalGiving UK, a registered in England and Wales charity number 1122823 and registered company number 5824642 (together "GlobalGiving") are responsible for providing the Services to you, and are joint controllers for the purposes of processing your personal information.

Information We Collect

Information you provide to us includes:

  • Contact details such as your first and last name, organisation name (if applicable), address, email and phone number. You may choose to provide additional information, such as your mailing address, a photo, favourite projects, etc., if you create a profile or create a GlobalGiving fundraiser. Account data such as the username, email, password or photo that you use to establish an online account with us directly or using your social media log in (e.g. Facebook).
  • Communications that we exchange with you, including when you contact us with questions, feedback or otherwise.
  • Marketing Data such as your preferences for receiving our marketing communications and details about your engagement with them.
  • Donation Information such as the name of the project you are donating to, the amount of your donation and your address for Gift Aid purposes. You may also provide a description about why you decided to donate to your selected cause, along with your name, general location and any personal message you send to the recipient.
  • If you give a GlobalGiving Gift Card, or donate in memory of someone else, we collect contact information from you, as well as the name, email address, and mailing address of your recipient. You may create a personal message to the recipient, which is stored on our servers.
  • Job applicant data when you use the “Jobs” section of the Services, we will collect information that you choose to provide to us such as your employment history, and as otherwise described in the Job Applicants section below.
  • Credit Card Numbers are collected (but not retained) and processed by a third-party payment vendor subject to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards. If you use PayPal, Apple Pay, M-PESA/M – Changa, or a similar service, their use of information is based on their terms of service and privacy policies. As a result we encourage you to review those policies carefully (see section on Third-Party Transfers)
  • Contests, Promotions and Surveys. Periodically GlobalGiving may invite you to participate in contests, take advantage of special promotions, and complete online surveys. We collect information you choose to provide when participating. If you have created a GlobalGiving account or profile, information we collect from these contests, promotions, and surveys may be associated with you personally.
  • Fundraising. When you create a fundraiser for a project on GlobalGiving, we collect information about projects you propose or wish to support. GlobalGiving will notify the project leader when a fundraiser is established for their project but does not share your personal data with the project leader or the project. Anything you post on the fundraiser site can be seen by visitors to the website.
  • Other data not specifically listed here, which we will use as described in this Privacy Policy or as otherwise disclosed at the time of collection.

If you provide us with personal information about a third party, you will only do so if you have made them aware of this Privacy Policy, and with their permission.

Automatic data collection

We, our service providers and our business partners may automatically log and combine information about you, your computer or mobile device, and your interaction over time with the Services, online resources and our communications, including:

  • Internet Protocol (“IP”) address, so we understand which country you are connecting from when you visit the Website;
  • Device data such as your computer’s or mobile device’s operating system type and version, manufacturer and model, browser type, screen resolution, device type (e.g., phone, tablet), IP address, unique identifiers (including identifiers used for advertising purposes), language settings and general location information such as city, state or geographic area.
  • Online activity data such as pages or screens you viewed, how long you spent on a page or screen, the website you visited before browsing to the Services, navigation paths between pages or screens, information about your activity on a page or screen, access times, duration of access and whether you have opened or otherwise engage with our communications, such as our marketing emails or clicked links or files within them.

We collect such personal information automatically via cookies, pixel tags, local storage technologies, web beacons or similar technologies on our Services (collectively referred to as “Cookies”), including for conducting analytics and advertising. Third-party sources

We may combined personal information we receive from you with personal information we obtain from other sources, such as:

  • Market data reporting companies that provide us with industry data, insights and analytics;
  • Marketing partners such as companies that have entered into joint marketing relationships with us.
  • Social Media companies such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X and YouTube, when you interact with our profiles on those services.
  • Publicly available sources such as government databases like the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), when conducting due diligence on non-profit organizations or conducting fraud prevention checks on donations.

If you choose not to provide the information above some of our Services may not be available to you.

How We Use Personal Information

We use your personal information for the following purposes or as otherwise described at the time of collection:

  • Providing and supporting our Services. We use personal information to operate, maintain, and provide you with our Services. In particular, we will use personal information to perform our contractual obligation under our terms of use, such as to allow you to create an account and use the Services. This may extend to contacting you regarding any questions related to your donation, mailing gift cards related to your donation (if applicable), and ensuring that Gift Aid can be claimed (if eligible).
  • Communicate with you about our Services. It is in our legitimate business interests to use personal information to respond to your requests, provide support, and communicate with you about our Services, including by sending announcements, updates, security alerts and support and administrative messages,.
  • Improve, monitor, personalize, and protect our Services. It is in our legitimate business interests to improve and keep our Services safe for our users, which includes:
    • understanding your needs and interests, and personalizing your experience with the Services and our communications;
    • troubleshooting, testing and research and to keep the Services secure; and
    • investigating and protecting against fraudulent, harmful, unauthorized or illegal activity.
  • Marketing and advertising. We, our service providers, and our third-party advertising partners may collect and use personal information for the following marketing and advertising purposes:
    • Direct marketing. We may send you GlobalGiving-related direct marketing communications as permitted by law, including by email. You may opt-out of our marketing communications as described in the Opt-out of marketing communications section below.
    • Interest-based advertising. We may engage third-party advertising companies, such as Google and Facebook, to display our ads on their online services.     • Except where consent is required, we undertake such marketing and advertising on the basis of our legitimate business interest.

  • Compliance and protection. We use personal information to comply with legal obligations, and it is in our legitimate business interests to use your personal information to defend us against legal claims or disputes, including to:
    • provide relevant data to HMRC or other competent authorities for Gift Aid claims;
    • check an organization’s compliance with OFAC regulations and other relevant sanctions regimes;
    • protect our, your or others’ rights, privacy, safety or property (including by making and defending legal claims);
    • audit our internal processes for compliance with legal and contractual requirements and internal policies;
    • enforce the terms and conditions that govern the Services;
    • prevent, identify, investigate and deter fraudulent, harmful, unauthorized, unethical or illegal activity, including cyberattacks and identity theft; and
    • comply with applicable laws, lawful requests and legal process, such as to respond to subpoenas or requests from government authorities.
  • For aggregation and anonymization. It is in our legitimate business interests to aggregate or anonymize personal information in a form that does not allow users to be personally identified and use the resulting information for statistical analyses regarding the use of the Services, such as to better understand our customer base, or for other purposes.

We will only process personal information on the basis of our legitimate interests where such interests are not overridden by your interests or your fundamental rights and freedoms. Where we process personal information on this basis, or for the purpose of direct marketing, you have the right to object to the processing of personal information we hold about you.

Where we process personal information on the basis of your consent, such consent can be withdrawn at any time, including by contacting us in the “Contact us” section below. We will apply your preferences going forward. This will not affect the lawfulness of the processing before you withdrew your consent.

Disclosure of Personal Information

We disclose personal information about you to the following recipients and in the following circumstances:

  • Affiliates. Our current and future affiliates, meaning entities that control, are controlled by, or are under common control with GlobalGiving. Our affiliates may use personal information we share with them in a manner consistent with this Privacy Policy.
  • Donation recipients. When you donate to a project or fundraiser, we share your name, contact details and amount of donation with the organization or person who created that project or fundraiser unless you choose for your donation to remain anonymous. They will use your personal information in accordance with their own Privacy Policy.
  • Your employer. When you make a donation that is part of a campaign sponsored by your employer, and/or when your employer is being asked to match your donation, we will share your name, email address and the amount of you donation with your employer.
  • Publicly on our Services. When you decide to post a comment or share why you supported a cause, unless you choose for this information to remain anonymous, we will share and attribute your comment on our site publicly and with the cause you have supported.
  • Service providers. Companies and individuals that provide services on our behalf or help us operate the services or our business (such as hosting, information technology, customer support, email delivery and website analytics services).
  • Professional advisors. Professional advisors, such as lawyers, auditors, bankers and insurers, where necessary in the course of the professional services that they render to us.
  • Authorities and others. Law enforcement, government authorities and private parties, as we believe in good faith to be necessary or appropriate for the compliance and protection purposes described above.
  • Business transferees. Acquirers and other relevant participants in business transactions (or negotiations for such transactions) involving a corporate divestiture, merger, consolidation, acquisition, reorganization, sale or other disposition of all or any portion of the business or assets of, or equity interests in, GlobalGiving (including, in connection with a bankruptcy or similar proceedings).
  • Advertising partners. Third party advertising companies, including for the interest-based advertising described above, that may collect information on the website through cookies and other automated technologies.

Job Applicants

When you visit the “Jobs” portion of the website, we collect the information that you provide to us in connection with your job application.This includes business and personal contact information, professional credentials and skills, educational and work history, and other information of the type that may be included in a résumé. This may also include diversity information that you voluntarily provide. We use this information on the basis of our legitimate business interests to facilitate our recruitment activities and process employment applications, such as by evaluating a job candidate for an employment activity, to monitor recruitment statistics, and to respond to surveys. We may also use this information as otherwise necessary (a) to comply with relevant laws or to respond to subpoenas or warrants served on us; (b) to protect and defend our or others’ rights or property; (c) in connection with a legal investigation; and/or (d) to investigate or assist in preventing any violation or potential violation of the law, this Privacy Policy, or our Terms of Use.

Information about Children

Our Services are not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 16. If you have reason to believe that a child under the age of 16 has provided information to transmit please contact us using the “Contact us” section below and we will try to delete that information from our databases.

Privacy Rights and Choices

Update your information. If you have a GlobalGiving account, you can review and update certain account information by logging into your account. You may also contact us to request deletion of your account and certain personal information. If we delete your account, you will not be able to access it.

Opt-out of marketing communications. You may opt out of marketing-related emails and other communications by following the opt-out or unsubscribe instructions in the communications you receive from us. If you have a GlobalGiving services account, you may also manage your subscriptions by logging into your account and updating your subscription preferences in your account. You may continue to receive services-related and other non-marketing emails.

Online tracking opt-out. You can opt out of interest-based advertising as described in our Cookie Policy.

Personal information requests. We also offer you choices that affect how we handle the personal information that we control. Depending on your location and the nature of your interactions with our Services, you may request the following in relation to personal information:

  • Information about how we have collected and used personal information. We have made this information available to you without having to request it by including it in this Privacy Policy.
  • Access to a copy of the personal information that we have collected about you. Where applicable, we will provide the information in a portable, machine-readable, readily usable format.
  • Correction of personal information that is inaccurate or out of date.
  • Deletion of personal information that we no longer need to provide the Services or for other lawful purposes.
  • Additional rights, such as to object to and request that we restrict our use of personal information.

In addition, when you create an account or profile on our site, you can decide whether to make some or all of that information public or private. You can change your choices at any time using the My Profile page. Please note, however, that your preferences do not affect the disclosures to project leaders or fundraisers. So, for example, if you make a donation to a fundraiser or contribute to a project, we will display your name, contact information and date of your donation on the fundraiser and to the project leader as applicable regardless of your profile settings, unless you choose for this information to remain anonymous at the time of your donation or contribution. You may ask us to change the anonymous settings on past donations by emailing us at privacy@globalgiving.org.

Limits on your choices. In some instances, your choices may be limited, such as where fulfilling your request would impair the rights of others, our ability to provide a service you have requested, or our ability to comply with our legal obligations and enforce our legal rights. If you are not satisfied with how we address your request, you may submit a complaint by contacting us as provided in the “Contact Us” section below.

Right to lodge a complaint with the data protection authority: If you have a concern about our privacy practices, including the way we handled your personal information, depending on where you reside, you may have the right to complain to a data protection authority where you live or work, or where you feel a violation has occurred. Retention

When you provide personal information at one of those sites, you are subject to the privacy policy of the operator of that site, not the GlobalGiving Privacy Policy. Safeguarding Your Information

GlobalGiving understands the importance of keeping your information secure and confidential. We take reasonable and appropriate measures to protect personal information from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction, taking into account the risks involved in the processing and the nature of the personal information.

We follow industry best practices and standards for security. We use a variety of physical and technical measures, policies, and procedures (such as access control procedures, network firewalls, encrypting data at rest, encrypting data in transit, and physical security) designed to protect our systems and your Personal Information.

Transfer of Data

Your data may be transferred directly by you to us in the United States, and will be stored on servers of our hosting service provider in the United States.
