Development Alert continues encouraging practical hygiene measures in community settings, including regular hand hygiene and safer practices when caring for sick family members.
This work is particularly important because households, schools, markets, transport points and other gathering places can become important points for health education.
The continuing DRC outbreak, with thousands of confirmed cases and deaths, demonstrates why prevention measures must remain active even when transmission decreases in particular locations.
We also encourage communities to seek guidance from trained health professionals rather than relying on rumors or unverified remedies.
WHO identifies strong community engagement, rapid case identification, testing, isolation, care, contact tracing and safe burials as important elements of outbreak control.
