Quarterly Report from DAR and Save the Date!

Thank you for giving dogs like Uno a second change at life! Uno is one of the many dogs who are born on the street and hit by careless drivers. But because of you, he is at DAR healing.

During the last 3 months (Apr - June) your donations and support have allowed us to do the following:

Sterilizations: 355
Rabies Vaccinations: 385
Rescues: 75
Pet Cases: 32
Treatments: 1314
Meals Provided for Street Dogs 27,000
Adoptions: 1

In the first 6 month of 2022, we hit our annual goal for sterilizations reaching 500! So now we are doubling our goal to reach 1000 sterilizations in Dharamsala to help break the cycle of suffering for unwanted street dogs.

How did we achieve this? You helped fund our Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) Training and Camp

6 Vets & 3 Vet Assistants Trained. 204 dogs Sterilized/Vaccinated

As the Founder of DAR, I could never have imagined we would get to this place when we first started in 2008. I am so proud of our team and so thankful to all of you.

In a place like India, where there are and estimated 62 million dogs, our philosophy has always been to encourage locals to feed, care for, and adopt our street dogs. In addition, we encourage folks to get the dogs in their area vaccinated for rabies and sterilized.

Once you have a healthy population of dogs in your area (fed, cared for, sterilized, vaccinated) the human/street dog conflict will decline, compassion appears, and dogs are happier. Thank you for helping us on this journey.

SARGE WAS RESCUED ON TIME

When we found Sarge he was in a miserable state. He was in so much pain; his wound filled with hundreds of maggots. We immediately provided pain relief, removed the maggots, and gently cleaned and bandaged him.

Maggot wounds have the potential to become fatal within just a couple of days. Every monsoon street dogs suffer. Due to the extreme dampness of the weather, it's simply astounding how quickly maggots can consume an animal's tissue. Street dogs do not have the comfort of shelter from the rains that come.

Last year we handled 50 such cases during the monsoon season - from mid-June to Mid September. On Average, it costs $100 per patient to go from hurt to healed. So we need $5000 to be able to help the dogs in need during this time.

Thank you for Giving Street Dogs a Second Chance

Thank you for your support from Jan - March of 2022.

Our goal for this year is to reduce suffering in two ways:

1. Increasing the amount of sterilizations and vaccinations we perform during the year.

2. Increasing adoptions.

The outcome of both will lower the population of dogs living on the street and in turn improve their welfare. There will be less resources to fight over, less puppies being born, and more dogs in homes.

These are lofty goals as Covid and other factors have prevented increases over the past two years. However, we have some exciting plans in place. Starting at the end of April, Worldwide Veterinary Services will be coming up to Dharamsala to run a 2 - week training for 6 vets and 2 vet assistants on best practices for sterilization camps and programs. Following the training we will run a 1-week camp with a goal of sterilizing 300 dogs.

Following this, we will be able to run future camps and increase our monthly numbers to help stabilize population and decrease suffering! We are so excited.

Increasing Local Adoption

Even though more and more locals are feeding and caring for dogs on the street, adoptions have remained stagnant. Starting in January, we began an awareness campaign called "I Love Desi Dogs." It features locals and Indian celebrities who have adopted street dogs and sharing why these dogs are the best!

These images and videos are being shared on social media to spread the word. Change takes time, but we know it can happen. Just look at our latest adoption! Little John was abused and left with broken legs on the street. Now he is in a loving home with Dharamsala local, Nandan.

Because of your support, Jovie and Tango received life-saving amputations after being hit by cars. Bee was allowed the time she needed to rest safely and began to walk again. Timmy, became pain free after the abuse he suffered. Timmi got his fur and his mojo back!

Quarterly Report from Dharamsala Animal Rescue

We cannot than you for your support through the first 9 months of 2021!

We have some incredible news: Our NGO Director, Pratibha Rana, was recognized by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, Boehinger Ingelheim, and an international panel, as the Animal Welfare Champion for World Rabies Day 2021.

This recognition came with a $1500 grant and a in-kind grant of all of their tools developed to track street dog population, rabies vaccination, and sterilization. We are beyond excited to be able to use these tools to improve our data collection which in turn will improve the way we work in our community.

Here is what you helped us accomplish from January 1 - October 31, 2021

Sterilized 370 dogs
Vaccinated 2008 dogs for rabies
Rescued 455 animals
Provided 7410 treatments
Treated 101 pets
Found homes for 15 dogs
Provided 31,200 meals for animals living on the street

Success Stories

We held our annual rabies vaccination camp for 10-days starting on September 28, World Rabies Day. In coordination with street feeders, volunteers, and the local Government veterinarian department, we were able to vaccinate 1541 dogs. This would not have been possible without your donations!

We rescued 50 dogs with maggot wounds during monsoon, our most difficult time of year to work due to the rain and dampness. This is a 12% increase in maggot wound cases over 2020. Again, thanks to your donations we were able to treat them all.

Our Sharon finally finds a home!

After being abandoned for three times, Sharon finally has a home where she'll be loved like a family member.

Nothing make us happier than seeing locals step up to and adopt local dogs - and local female dogs at that. Female dogs are rejected because they are born female. Gender inequality in India goes down to the dog level.

We work with a local activist on her hashtag campaign #puppybeti (female child) to encourage locals that females are just as good as males!

Because of your support, Trisha's leg healed after being run over by a car. Jack began to walk again, Bowie's eye was saved, and Arlo and Dialen both survived maggot wounds.
