Uganda's Ebola-Free Status Becomes a Foundation

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear donor,

Uganda's successful containment of Ebola represents an extraordinary achievement for the country and an important source of hope for communities across the region. After reporting 20 confirmed cases during the 2026 outbreak, Uganda completed the required surveillance period without detecting additional infections and was declared Ebola-free. This achievement was made possible through rapid case identification, contact tracing, infection prevention, community engagement, and the commitment of frontline health workers and community volunteers.

However, Uganda's success comes at a time when the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a rapidly escalating Ebola emergency. Recent reports indicate that the DRC outbreak has surpassed 4,000 confirmed infections and 1,800 deaths, making it the largest recorded outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus.

For Development Alert, Uganda's declaration does not mean that preparedness activities should stop. Border communities remain closely connected through trade, transport, family relationships, agriculture, and other daily activities. Maintaining strong surveillance and community awareness is therefore essential to protecting the progress Uganda has made.

Our continued efforts focus on strengthening community alert systems, supporting local health volunteers, promoting accurate health information, and maintaining readiness for rapid response. The field motorcycle acquired during the emergency response continues to provide valuable mobility for reaching remote communities and transporting essential materials.

Your generosity helped Uganda overcome a serious public health threat. Today, that investment is helping preserve the country's hard-won progress while strengthening preparedness for communities living close to the ongoing crisis in the DRC.
