Empowering 2,000 youth for work in Latin America

ENGLISH VERSION

¡Our program in Bolívar has been a success! We continued our training program throughout November and December, completing the entrepreneurship and bakery workshops. The boys were able to realize that it is possible for them to project themselves as owners of their own businesses, and many of them see their potential in bakery as a perfect complement.

On December 6^th we were able to achieve the visit to the facilities of our ally in this task: Molino 3 Castillos. This is a very traditional factory in Cartagena that turns grains of wheat into different types of flour, especially made for all kinds of purposes: bread, bakery, pastries, pizza, etc. The youngsters were welcomed as guests of honors and received a guided tour of the production plant. This was a very exciting and motivating part of the program.

On December 18^th we conclude the 2018 program, and we gladly graduated the first cohort of youngsters.

The statistics of the program were as follows:

• 25 youngsters began the program
• 5 withdrew within the first month for personal reasons
• 4 eloped from the attention center upon finishing the program
• 2 regained freedom, as they finished their sentence

In January of 2019 we kicked off the year with an inspirational talk about empowerment and resilience, and in February we gathered the testimonies of some of them through one on one interviews. (See link below for video)

In February of 2019, Molinos 3 Castillos agreed to sponsor the extension of the program to include several additional bakery workshops and continue to phase 2 by assessing the facilities of the bakery workshop in order to start a production center for internal consumption, and projecting it to construc a portfolio to start sales by order.

At this point we will need to extend our budget, in order to continue with the future phases and to be able to train more youngsters at this attention center. We will make sure to keep you posted, and again we thank you for making all of this possible!

¡Nuestro programa en Bolívar ha sido un éxito! Continuamos nuestro programa de capacitación durante noviembre y diciembre, completando los talleres de emprendimiento y panadería. Los jóvenes pudieron darse cuenta de que es posible que se proyecten a sí mismos como dueños de su propio negocio, y muchos de ellos ven potencial en la panadería como un complemento perfecto.

El 6 de diciembre realizamos la visita a las instalaciones de nuestro aliado en esta tarea: Molino 3 Castillos. Esta es una fábrica muy tradicional en Cartagena que convierte granos de trigo en diferentes tipos de harina, para todo tipo de propósitos: pan, pastelería, pizza, etc. Los jóvenes fueron recibidos como invitados de honor y recibieron una visita guiada de la planta de producción. Esta fue una parte muy emocionante y motivadora del programa.

El 18 de diciembre concluimos el programa de 2018 y con mucho gusto graduamos a la primera cohorte de jóvenes.

Las estadísticas del programa fueron las siguientes:

• 25 jóvenes iniciaron el programa

• 5 retirados dentro del primer mes por motivos personales

• 4 fugados del centro de atención al finalizar el programa

• 2 recuperaron la libertad, ya que terminaron su sanción

En enero de 2019 comenzamos el año con una charla inspiradora sobre el empoderamiento y la resiliencia, y en febrero reunimos los testimonios de algunos de ellos a través de entrevistas personales.

En febrero de 2019, Molinos 3 Castillos acordó patrocinar la extensión del programa para incluir varios talleres de panadería adicionales y continuar en la fase 2 evaluando las instalaciones del taller de panadería para iniciar un centro de producción para consumo interno y proyectarlo para la creación de un portafolio de productos para iniciar las ventas por pedido.

En este punto, tendremos que ampliar nuestro presupuesto para continuar con las fases futuras y poder capacitar a más jóvenes en este centro de atención. Nos aseguraremos de mantenerlos informado, y nuevamente les agradecemos por hacer todo esto posible.

ENGLISH VERSION

Last October we finished our race to Global Giving successfully and achieved almost 90% of the funding necessary for the first phase of our project: Empowering 100 Youngsters for Work in Colombia. This phase aims to develop a program to train the first 25 youngsters, located near the city of Cartagena.

With the funding that we received, we developed a program for soft skills, entrepreneurship, and practical training on bakery. This report aims to document the progress of the program so far.

The profile of the target population is the following:

Young men between the ages of 16 and 23. They all come from vulnerable communities from the Caribbean coast, where poverty is predominant. These young men come from neighborhoods with invisible frontiers ruled by gangs, violence, and drugs. Most of them come from broken homes, or from rural zones affected by violence. All of them have committed a fault being minors, and have been sentenced by a judge to comply with a restoring punishment. The 25 we are working with are deprived of freedom. 

The main areas of investment have been structured as follows:

• Project Management – 15%
• Workshops for Soft Skills – 25%
• Workshops for Entrepreneurship – 30%
• Workshop material (paper, printing, pencils, cooking utensils, etc) – 5%
• Practical Training in Bakery - Donated by ally company
• Merchandising – 5%
• Travel and trasnportation expenses – 15%
• Follow up and measurement – 5%

So far, these young men have participated 5 workshops for soft skills in topicas such as assertive communication and conflict resolution, 2 for entrepreneurship where each one of them is creating their own business idea and model, and 2 practical trainings in bakery where they are learning how to make exquisite deserts and pastries. We have two weeks left in the intensive program, that will end with a visit to the factory that produces all the raw materials for baking, mainly wheat flour and other complementary ingredients. This will be considered an academic visit that will not only show them how these materials are produced, but also how a company of this magnitude is run.

The program started officially in the end of August and will end the first week of December.

SPANISH VERSION

En octubre pasado, terminamos con éxito nuestra carrera hacia Global Giving y obtuvimos casi el 90% de los fondos necesarios para la primera fase de nuestro proyecto: Empoderar a 100 jóvenes para el trabajo y Emprendimiento en Colombia. Esta fase tiene como objetivo desarrollar un programa para capacitar a los primeros 25 jóvenes, ubicados cerca de la ciudad de Cartagena. Con los fondos que recibimos, desarrollamos un programa para habilidades blandas, emprendimiento y capacitación práctica en panadería.

Este informe tiene como objetivo documentar el progreso del programa hasta el momento. El perfil de la población objetivo es el siguiente: Hombres jóvenes entre las edades de 16 y 23 años. Todos provienen de comunidades vulnerables de la costa Caribe, donde predomina la pobreza. Estos jóvenes provienen de barrios con fronteras invisibles gobernadas por pandillas, violencia y drogas. La mayoría de ellos provienen de hogares disfuncionales o de áreas rurales afectadas por la violencia. Todos ellos han cometido faltas siendo menores de edad, y han sido condenados por un juez para cumplir con una sanción restaurativa y se encuentran privados de la libertad.

Las principales áreas de inversión se han estructurado de la siguiente manera:

• Gestión de proyectos - 15%
• Talleres para habilidades blandas – 25%
• Talleres para el emprendimiento - 30%
• Talleres prácticos de panadería (donados por una empresa aliada)
• Material del taller (papel, impresión, lápices, utensilios de cocina, etc.) - 5%
• Merchandising - 5%
• Gastos de transporte y transporte - 15%.
• Seguimiento y medición - 5%.

Hasta ahora, estos jóvenes han participado en 5 talleres de habilidades blandas, 2 talleres de emprendimiento y 2 capacitaciones prácticas en panadería. Nos quedan dos semanas en el programa intensivo, que terminará con una visita a la fábrica que produce todas las materias primas para panadería, principalmente harina de trigo y otros ingredientes complementarios. Esto se considerará una visita académica que no solo les mostrará cómo se producen estos materiales, sino también cómo se maneja una empresa de esta magnitud. 

El programa comenzó oficialmente a fines de agosto y finalizará la primera semana de diciembre.
