Dear Supporters,
Summer is such a great time to exponentially impact children’s education!
During the months of June and July the classes have a break from their regular curriculum, leaving a great opportunity for children to enroll in fun and more interactive education. Our partners, Save the Children, have a great program for these summer courses in their ludotecas, but Contando con un Amigo School staff prefer to have a break. At Save the Children’s Ludoteca, an average of 4 volunteers have participated daily during the morning shift, supporting the staff in the activities with children. These courses are very popular with a maximum of 40 children attending in only one shift. The activities have been super fun and important for children’s development. Subjects like child abuse identification are important in classes, and different techniques are used to make sure children understand the topics.
At the Contando con un Amigo school, GVI volunteers and staff organized a plan to cover very important topics, like arts, physical education, English lessons, environmental education, among others. GVI volunteers have planned activities using recycled materials and encouraged creativity to allow participants to discover their skills, starting the day with their favourite something (favorite fruit, favorite superhero, etc.), a Hello song in English and checking how they are and feel, and closing with relaxing colouring activities or sports. Physical activities were considered in the planning and very important for a healthy lifestyle and teamwork, including a stretching session before and after each game. During the summer course we included a fundraising event at Contando con un Amigo school.
The 12 children that participated, with our GVI volunteers, collected in total an incredible amount of 715 plastic bottles from 1 km of the road that connects their community with the highway. For one hour GVI staff, volunteers and participants from the school walked 1 km, and collected plastic down the strong summer sun of Playa del Carmen. In the debrief, the children were very participative regarding the bad behaviour of throwing garbage in the jungle or the roads.
Thank you for your continued support!
GVI Mexico, Playa del Carmen
