Promoting Gender Equality in Invasores

Dear Supporters,

We have recently completed a gender equality workshop at our Invasores project and it was a great success!

The workshops are delivered on topics that we have identified as being relevant to the lives of the children living in the area. We prepared a 2-hour class full of discussions, activities, games, drawing and friendly competitions about gender equality.

Why gender equality?

The women in Mexico suffer from discrimination and violence. There are still places where girls are traded for goods and where women are not allowed to express their opinions. With this workshop, we aimed to inform the children on the importance of this topic. To our surprise, this day work out really well, kids really enjoyed it and based on their responses about the differences between boys and girls the workshop was really helpful for them. The boys, for example, admitted they want to cry sometimes without being mocked. As well as girls saying that they wanted to play soccer freely.

As a reward for their amazing participation in the classes and workshop, we gave them some toys and clothes that were donated by people in Playa de Carmen. You could not believe the excitement on their faces, something that for some people is no longer useful for others it is a treasure. 6 Month Extension of Dog Therapy!

Dear Supporters,

We have collected sufficient funds to pay for another 6 months of dog therapy at CEAI, the Integral Care Centre for special needs children. This therapy is funded completely by the GVI CT, every 6 months volunteers of the community projects in Mexico challenge themselves to fundraise the money to cover this therapy, so far 2 complete years of dog therapy have been donated and we aim to continue with this support for the next years.

This therapy is funded completely by the GVI Charitable Trust. Every 6 months GVI volunteers at the community projects in Mexico challenge themselves to fundraise the money to cover this therapy. So far 2 complete years of dog therapy have been donated and we aim to continue with this support for as long as we are able.

But, why we are doing this?

Research shows that the presence of pets is associated with feelings of tranquillity and relaxation as well as reduction of heart rate or blood pressure. Having pets it is also associated with increased social interaction, acting as social catalysts made in a variety of environments, individually or in groups.

So far dog therapy has improved some of the daily tasks that challenge the special needs students of the CEAI (Integral Care Centre) lives as this therapy supports the developing of fine and gross motor skills.

The dogs that help at this therapy have been trained to assist persons with physical, visual, hearing impairment, with recurrent attacks or autism, the dogs or therapy assistants encourage students to focus and interact with them in basic tasks gaining independence and improving their life outside of the centre.

The dog therapy has contributed to strength pedagogical knowledge of both language and mathematics, allowing students to retain the concepts reviewed during the week at classes with their teachers.

In the human- animal bond are a multitude of benefits are used in the treatment of people mentally ill, or as in this case they are helping with the educational programs for sectors that require special assistance, such as adults or children with special needs.

Dog therapy strengths the relationships of the centre with other local organization as this therapy is provided by a Discan member organization in the area.

With your kind contributions, we will continue delivering these therapies to the students of the CEAI that have shown an affinity to the therapy.

Invasores: A New Initiative

Dear Supporter,

Towards the end of 2015 the GVI Mexico staff and volunteers started, what is hoped to be, a long-term project within the community of Invasores. The project aims to provide the children with a variety of educational workshops covering several topics (English, literacy, movement and health).

The Invasores community is an area with extreme poverty, containing people from some states within the south of Mexico who have built their homes using the waste materials from a nearby industrial dump site. This community is illegally based on federal land and has an association with limited access to educational resources and other social issues including over population of animals, such as cats and dogs. This issue has been address by our current partner Cocos Animal Welfare.

In partnership with Cocos, GVI ran a 1 week summer school within Invasores that included a variety of educational sessions covering several topics. This 1 week, short-term project was such a great success that it was always the aim to continue this work within a more long-term project.

Towards the end of the year, we facilitated the first weekly educational workshop to children within this community, covering similar topics previously carried out in the 1 week summer school session.

The current structure of these workshops includes starting at 9am in the morning and begins with a welcome for the children, followed by a pre-prepared workshop, focusing on either English, literacy, movement and health) and finishes with a short reflection and goodbye reviewing the day’s activities and the children’s response to the lesson. Hand washing resources and drinking water are also provided for the children if required.

Upon completion of this workshop, a report is completed that includes information on the number and age of the children, the planned educational activity, a summary on what was successful and what can be improved on in regards to the planning for forthcoming lessons.

We are very excited about the future of this project going into 2016 and we look forward to brining you more news and updates.
