Capoeira: New community activity

By Kate Robey | Charitable Trust Operations Manager

Learning about Capoeira
Learning about Capoeira

Dear Supporter,

We are very excited about a new partnership and activity that we have started that will benefit all of the children that we work with! The objective of this new project is to create an ongoing sports program with our new partner, Capoeira Cativerio, which is run in Playa del Carmen by Omar.

You might be wondering what Capoeoeira is?

It is a Brazillian martial art that combines dance, areobic movement, non-contact martial arts and music. It is an excellent form of physical activity and it promotes discapline and focus to its participants. The practice is intolerant of discrimination based on ethnicity, social status or any defining attributes that could cause prejudice. This creates an environment where people from varied backgrounds are able to interact and promotes tolerance, equality and acceptance.

It has the potential to be highly beneficial for children who have social issues and who require guidance and direction. Omar and his colleagues have provided training to children and in exchange the children have helped with cleaning and upkeep of the tarining premises. It has had some wonderfully positive results.

After an initial discussion between Omar and ourselves, it was apparent that there was a possibility of the formation of a new project and activity for our current projects. As a result of this new partnership, we have incorporated a Capoeira class within our timetable for the Invasores initative. It has been a great success with the children! We are busy facilitating the tarining of our staff members so that they will be able to lead the activity and in time, we will train volunteers to assist as well.

We are very excited about the potential scope for this new activity and are looking forward to seeing where it will take us in the new year.

Thank you for your generosity and support! We wish you a wonderful and happy new year. Look forward to chatting again in the new year!

With Gratitude,

GVI Mexico
