Growing comes with new challenges!

The new facilities

Dear Supporters,

Last December, the Integral Care Centre of Playa del Carmen (CEAI) moved to a new location, the previous school lacked space to increase the capacity of students and lacked adequate spaces for different therapies. The old facilities also did not have the adequate infrastructure for moving wheelchairs around or perform physical activities.

We are pleased to tell you that the CEAI finally found a proper school building for rent and they moved promptly! This new building came with the following benefits:

Increase capacity. They are now able to accept 25 students per shift (currently 10-morning shift, 5 evening shift).
Extension of working schedule for 1 on 1 therapies on the afternoon shift.
The school has 4 classrooms, 3 of them fully equipped to support some of the therapies provided at the CEAI (occupational therapy, pedagogic area, daily activities support, sensorial therapies and music therapy).
The ramp at the entrance and ground level construction makes access and moving easier for students in wheelchairs, low coordination students or parents carrying their children. The playground is bigger too, helping for physical activities, dog therapies and recreational spare time.

The daily activities encourage independence of the individuals, under the supervision of staff the students perform basic activities to live an independent life, these activities include cooking, heating their food, setting the table, clean dishes and tidying up after themselves, personal hygiene like hand washing, toilet usage and teeth brushing.

As the new location brings benefits, it comes with new challenges. Transport has become an essential need to keep the attendance of students, the new location of the centre doesn't have public transportation service and parents can’t afford taxis to take their children to therapies, diminishing the attendance during the week from the regular 5 days to an average of 3.

The plans for the next months are to provide First Aid Training to teachers, continue funding the dog therapy (secured from February to July 2017, completing 2 years of dog therapies for students of the CEAI) and help the to acquire a van to ease the pressure on the parents.

An Overview of Our Achievements in Mexico in 2016

Dear Supporters,

On behalf of our partners, volunteers, staff and the children in Playa del Carmen, we want to say a massive Thank You for your support in 2016! Local organizations are making a bigger impact on the ground because of you and your support. It may seem like a small contribution but when lots of us contribute for the same cause we manage to overcome many obstacles.

This year, our local partner NGOS, Save the Children and Integral Care Centre (CEAI), received financial support to improve the security and conditions of their organizations in Mexico. Save The Children staff received emergency first responder training and CEAI improved the image of the centre by getting new uniforms with their logo for both students and teachers as well as continuing with the dog therapy that we started last year with the special needs children.

Here is a breakdown of what your donations were able to achieve in 2016

Dog therapy from April to Sept for all students at the CEAI
100 T-Shirts Uniforms for Students and Staff at CEAI
Annual update of the Emergency First Responder training for working with children for the staff at Save the Children.
Year-round supply of safe drinking water for children at Save the Children ludotecas.

In 2017 we will assist our local partner, CEAI to make improvements to their facilities as well as commit to funding another year of dog therapy for the children. We are also hoping to be able to help a new partner, Contando con un Amigo, by supporting them in the construction of a new school that they have planned which will provide access to schooling for children from one of the more disadvantaged areas in Playa del Carmen. We are also hoping to be able to assist them with purchasing some of the equipment that they will need for teaching the children.

Peace One Day

World Peace Day was celebrated on 21 September. We decided to celebrate this day this year by focusing our projects on the topic of spreading peace and dealing with troubles.

Sadly, in Mexico, there is delinquency and the famous drug trafficking war, and even though the area where we work has not been affected by the last one, people tend to have a hostile response to things which, in turn, makes an impact on the kids. This adds up to the way people are educated and how they deal with expressing themselves and engaging with others.

A Peaceful Scavenger Hunt

Based on the objective and the goals of Peace One Day, we created a scavenger hunt full of activities related to peace and conflict management.

The activity began with questions and answers about what the kids thought peace was, looking at how they behave, what did they do when something they do not agree with happens and how they treat other kids and people in general. The following activity was to work in teams, but not with their friends, to complete a puzzle. After that, we all drew and colored a big peace sign without giving any specific order, this to see how the kids acted by themselves when having to share space and material with others. The next activity was to blow up a white balloon and give it, along with a huge hug, to a person they had been having a conflict with and to try and sort out their differences.

The response of the scavenger hunt was amazing. We confirmed our hypothesis- kids react as they are used to be treated instead of how they really believe is okay. For example, a little one in the Ludoteca almost is often bullying another child, telling him he is not good for this and that and showing him his weaknesses. During the activity with the balloons, this little one went directly to the other kid asking for forgiveness and hugged him with authentic feelings.

He explained to us that at his house he is the little one and he is always being treated like that, so in Ludoteca he has to prove he is the big one but he really doesn’t mean it. It was just there was no one to tell him he can act differently.

By doing this event we realized they actually know how to deal with conflict in a peaceful way but in order to meet the expectations adults put on them, they often act out and copy patterns of behavior they are used to seeing. We still have a lot of work, to provide them a secure space where they can develop properly. The celebration of Peace One Day reminded them of how important is to treat and be treated well and that there are always a lot of ways to resolve their troubles.
