Hello from the team at East Mississippi Animal Rescue! It's hard to believe we've already entered into the second month of 2019, and things are already in full swing here at our organization. We're continuing to help animals in need thanks to gracious donors like you. To thank you for your support, today we would like to tell you a little about Chrissy and her puppies, who your donations recently helped!
Chrissy, a 12 pound chihuahua-mix, came to us in early December. She was pregnant and ready to pop! On December 15th, after five days in our care, Chrissy gave birth to a litter of beautiful puppies. While taking care of her babies, we noticed that something was wrong- Chrissy's breathing seemed a little "off." She had already tested negative for heartworms, so we took her in to the vet's office to have her checked out. The vet discovered Chrissy had a diaphragmatic hernia. This condition occurs when the abdominal organ(s), such as the liver, stomach, intestine, move into an abnormal opening in the animal's diaphragm, which separates the abdomen from the rib cage area. In Chrissy's case, her liver, small and large intestines, and gall bladder were in her thorax with multiple adhesions present. Diaphragmatic hernias can be present at birth or they can be caused by trauma. After examining Chrissy, our vet believed her condition was caused by trauma, perhaps by someone kicking her.
Thanks to your support and donations, Chrissy underwent surgery costing approximately $1,400. She is currently doing well and recovering. Her puppies are 8 weeks old now and have all found their forever homes, with the exception of Carlos, who is still waiting patiently. As for Chrissy, she will continue to rest and rebuild her strength as she awaits her forever home.
If you are interested in adopting Chrissy, Carlos, or any other animals in our care, please feel free to contact us. Thank you for supporting us in our mission to help animals in need!
