Music Instruments & Supplies for NYC Kids

We're excited to let you know that your donations helped students at ETM school M.S. 118 get their instruments for the first time!

You make this possible, and we're so thankful. ETM Music Teacher Marissa Steele shared, "Many students expressed interest in learning instruments. A lot of them come from families who play instruments, and they just wanted the opportunity to play with their families. I am so glad they have been given the chance."

This year presented extraordinary challenges for our schools, but donations from GlobalGiving make all the difference. Your gifts make an impact and keep music in our schools.

I wanted to share a quote from Penny Swift's recent interview with the Gotham Gazette about the importance of music education. "Our students have faced the trauma of isolation, fear, and, in many cases, grief. Racial inequity remains widespread. And although music programs are vital to a well-rounded education, over half of New York City public schools don't have a full-time music educator on staff. Giving students access to music education is core to my nonprofit's mission and vital to facing these continuing challenges."

Our mission remains clear: To provide access to high-quality music education to every student in New York City.

Happy New Year from ETM!

As the city navigates the ongoing pandemic that continues to upend all of our lives, we wanted to update our supporters on some good news in the world you make possible through your support.

In the Fall semester, Education Through Music was able to partern with 51 partner schools - including 31 elementary, 19 middle, and 1 high school. In total, ETM egnages 18,000 students in weekly music lessons. That is over 200,000 hours of music education provided to children in the fall. Considering the circumstances surrounding this year, we have a lot to be thankful for and proud of.

This year presented extraordinary challenges for our schools, including dramatic reductions in school budgets, funding cuts for arts education by the city, and unprecedented logistical challenges. As so many of our partner principals report - without ETM, there would be no music at my school during the pandemic.

In addition to keeping music alive, our focus this year has been on equipping our teachers with the resources to teach remotely. Thanks to a generous donor, each ETM teacher was equipped with high quality headphones, microphones, and personal laptops to be able to record and stream their music lessons to their students. Teachers were also provided new software and training to be able to create dynamic and engaging music lessons. 

Thank you for providing thousands of students with the access to a complete education that includes music.
