Spring 2022 Update - Spotlight P.S. 46

By Kaitlin Hines-Vargas | Associate Director of Development

This Spring, Education Through Music is pleased to be taking the time to recognize the individual successes of our teachers and our partner schools. By providing comprehensive music education to children during the school day, we are consistently making a positive impact on the entire school community for each partner school, from the teachers to the administration, and of course the students’ families.

Ms. G, a 4th-grade teacher at ETM Partner School P.S. 46 has noticed a great deal of progress since music was offered at her school. Says Ms. G, “We’ve had several programs come and go in 16 years, many short-lived and some for lower grade students. They’ve only introduced a scheduled music program in the last 3 or 4 years. Then we had the pandemic. So this is like the first year my kids got a weekly, structured music class.”

At the year’s halfway mark, she’s seen great enthusiasm, and believes the work benefits the entire school community. Of the students, she says, “They’ve never touched a ukulele before, they’ve never worked as a choral group. And that helps their overall [skills in] working as a unit.”

Last year, as students began to transition back to the classroom, P.S. 46 music teacher Ms. D observed, “While this year was unlike any other and difficult for everyone, the classroom teachers and I were able to create such a wonderful musical environment that allowed students to express themselves and their emotions. The enthusiasm and participation of each class was so exciting. The impact even 20 minutes of music a day can bring to the hectic lives of students is enormous.”

The skills the students learned have been celebrated through numerous performances, streamed for their families and school community. This school year, under the direction of Ms. D, all students from grades 1-3 recorded a holiday performance. The P.S. 46 choir, made up of students grades 3-5, performed live on January 20th under the direction of Ms. D.

As students ready themselves for Spring performances, we thank our donors for supporting ETM in bringing comprehensive and sequential music classes – including materials and supplies for performances – to P.S. 46 and schools like it citywide!
