A step closer towards the dreams

By Medha Sharma | Project Leader

Together We Smile
Together We Smile

The earthquake not only shattered the houses of the girls in Kharanitar but also many of their dreams. The financial priorities of their families had shifted to rebuilding their houses from saving for their dreams. Being a patriarchal society, it was the dreams of the girls that were placed on the chopping board. The girls always questioned us on will we able to help them by supporting them in their activities? We could not do so before but now with the funds, we are able to help set wings to the dreams of the girls. To help the girls step one step closer to their dreams, we provided the girls with a seed grant. The seed grant will support the girls to enroll themselves in creative classes such as music classes, computer classes and science laboratory classes.

Kharanitar is a rural village where much of the technological advances are yet to penetrate the village. The girls there showed a strong desire to learn about technology. However financial constraints had prevented them from doing so. Through the seed grant, three of the girls were able to enroll themselves in computer classes offered by their school and different learning centers. Here they learnt about basic typing skills, Microsoft Office Package and basic computer skills. The girls felt that this skill would come in handy when they are exploring professional jobs in the future.

Four of the girls had enrolled themselves in science laboratory class where they explored the wonders of science. They had learnt to prepare hydrogen gas, measure volume and mass of irregular objects and also learnt about friction and gravity. The girls were excited to share their learning experience with their friends. Few of the girls had taken up tutoring classes to pass their final examination of 10th grade. They couldn’t afford tutoring classes but knew that they would not be able to clear the exams without extra help. Not being able to finish 10th grade would have put many limitations on their future too. The girls utilized the seed grant to get the extra help they needed to complete their education.

Two of the girls are pursuing their dreams to become civil engineers. They are utilizing the seed grant to learn about engineering software which isn’t offered in their course. This will help them to become a professional in their field.

We are excited that these girls are chasing their dreams, the dreams that were once buried among other things. We hope to enable the girls to do more for themselves and contribute to their community. In a few months, we will update you regarding how far the girls have come by utilizing their seed grant. Till then, please keep helping in making dreams come true.
