"I dream to become a teacher someday."

By Medha Sharma | Project Leader

Big dreams in those small eyes
Big dreams in those small eyes

Pursuing her higher secondary education by majoring in English, Amisha  is a 16 years old girl of Kharanitar village with high hopes of becoming a teacher someday. Her transformation in the journey has been beautiful for us as well as the whole community to witness. She barely used to talk to us when she initially joined the program . A shy young girl with so much passion and drive within but was reluctant to open up.

The dreams and aspirations of young girls are always placed second in a patriarchal society like ours. When Amisha wanted to pursue her dream to become a teacher someday she struggled initially to convince her family. She had completed her studies upto grade 10 in a Nepali medium school. So, when she decided to become an English teacher she was rebelling against the notion of how a government school student wanted to learn English.

The program has been helping her in this journey. Her struggles with the language were seen evidently during the initial phase of her studies so she thought of seeking help through tuition classes. She has been using the grant money to take up tuition classes on English Grammar with which she struggled initially.

Besides tuition classes she has also purchased dictionaries, story books in English which has helped her better her journey academically. “ I was completely sure I wanted to become an English teacher, but when I was struggling in the classes I wanted to quit and give up but with the help of the tuition classes I have started performing better today and I still see myself being a good teacher in the future.”Amisha now shares.

The economic burden of education still persists in the houses of Kharanitar village. The decisions of the parents to let their children especially girls study after grade 10 is appreciative where young girls are married off after the completion of grade 10. With the additional economic burden of tuition classes the dream of Amisha would have been in jeopardy. The seed grant has come to a huge support in this regard where she is able to pursue her dreams without exerting any other financial burden in her family.
