Rescue Families From Acute Hunger in Karamoja

Karamoja, in northeastern Uganda, continues to face a serious food insecurity crisis, leaving thousands of vulnerable families struggling to access sufficient and nutritious food. An estimated 673,000 people are experiencing severe food insecurity due to crop failures, prolonged dry spells, and rising food prices. These challenges have made it increasingly difficult for families to provide regular meals, particularly for children and other vulnerable household members.

At Good Cause Foundation (GCF), we recognize that access to food is a basic human need and that no family should have to face hunger without hope of receiving support. Through our emergency food assistance campaign, we aim to reach vulnerable households across Karamoja, prioritizing children, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and families with limited resources.

Why Emergency Food Assistance Matters

For many families in Karamoja, repeated crop failures and prolonged periods of inadequate rainfall have severely affected agricultural production. Households that traditionally depend on farming are finding it difficult to harvest enough food for their own consumption. At the same time, rising market prices make it harder for families to purchase essential food supplies.

Children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of food insecurity. Inadequate access to nutritious meals can affect their health, growth, concentration, and ability to participate effectively in school. Pregnant and breastfeeding women also face increased nutritional needs, making access to sufficient and nutritious food especially important.

Without timely assistance, vulnerable families may be forced to reduce their daily food intake, skip meals, or sell essential household assets to meet immediate needs. These coping strategies can deepen poverty and make recovery even more difficult.

What Good Cause Foundation Seeks to Achieve

When a family cannot afford enough food, children are often the first to suffer.

In Karamoja, Uganda, the current food crisis is creating serious risks for children and mothers. Updated assessments indicate that approximately 673,000 people are experiencing IPC Phase 3 or higher food insecurity, including around 118,000 people in Emergency-level conditions.

More than 154,200 children under five years old and approximately 13,900 pregnant and breastfeeding women are suffering from, or expected to face, acute malnutrition.

The situation has reached Critical levels in Kotido and Kaabong, highlighting the urgent nutritional needs facing some communities.

The crisis has been intensified by poor rainfall and crop failures, leaving many households dependent on markets for food. Meanwhile, increasing prices of staple foods are making it increasingly difficult for vulnerable families to put sufficient food on the table.

Every number represents a human life.

673,000 people are not simply statistics. They are mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, and entire communities.
