Empowering Communities: PLANE's Initiative to Combat HIV Prevalence
In a bid to address the alarming HIV prevalence rates in Fort Portal tourism city and Kabarole district, Western Uganda, PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) embarked on a crucial project to support girls and women in accessing post-rape services. The statistics reveal a pressing need for intervention, with Fort Portal recording a staggering HIV prevalence rate of 14.1% and Kabarole district at 10.8%, surpassing the national average of 5.1%.
PLANE's initiative focuses on creating awareness, prevention measures, and control strategies to combat the high prevalence rate, particularly among adolescents, youths aged 14-29, and women. Through community engagements in schools, places of worship, and other public forums, PLANE has been actively disseminating information on preventive measures, advocating for timely access to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PreP) services, as well as promoting the proper use of condoms.
The emphasis on prompt access to PEP services within 72 hours following sexual violence incidents is vital in preventing HIV transmission among survivors. The use of emergency contraceptives within a short window period post unprotected sex is also highlighted to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Despite the availability of these preventive measures, a significant portion of the population, including many Ugandan, remains unaware of their existence and efficacy.
Achievements:
In a remarkable display of impact, PLANE conducted 10 engaging sessions in secondary schools, leveraging the expertise of two female Peer Educators to educate adolescents on HIV prevention, responsible sexual behavior, condom usage, and the importance of PEP adherence. The emphasis on emergency contraception's effectiveness within a critical timeframe reinforced the message of empowerment and informed decision-making among young girls.
Furthermore, through radio talk shows on reputable platforms like Voice of Tooro and Life FM, PLANE extended its outreach to a wider audience, enhancing public awareness on HIV prevalence and preventive measures. The incorporation of radio dramas and community dialogues facilitated candid discussions among parents, local leaders, and community members, fostering a culture of openness and informed decision-making.
Appreciation:
PLANE extends heartfelt appreciation to all supporters and donors whose contributions have been instrumental in propelling our mission forward. The impact of their generosity reverberates through the educational sessions conducted in schools and communities, empowering youth and adolescents with crucial information on available preventive services.
Our Plan:
Looking ahead, PLANE envisions expanding its reach to 15 secondary and primary schools in the upcoming quarter, subject to continued support. These efforts are pivotal in addressing the vulnerabilities faced by adolescents and youth, who are disproportionately affected by HIV prevalence and require targeted interventions.
Together, let us join hands in combating HIV prevalence, empowering vulnerable populations, and fostering a healthier, informed society. Your support is instrumental in driving positive change and shaping a brighter future for those in need.
