Post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, is a way of preventing HIV infection. It involves using a four-week course of the drugs used to treat HIV, taken very soon after you may have been exposed to the virus. In the event of unprotected sex, an emergency contraceptive pill will stop a pregnancy from occurring. It can work up to 3-5 days (or 120 hours) after unprotected sex, depending on the brand you use. Most people around the world Uganda inclusive aren't aware that medication exists.
The emergency contraception can be effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy for up to 120 hours, though it is most effective within a 72-hour window. This lack of awareness about the potential for preventing HIV and unwanted pregnancy could translate to women not making more use of preventive services.
