Strengthening Market-Based Ebola Awareness

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Markets are essential to rural livelihoods, but they are also places where people from multiple communities meet.

With the DRC Ebola outbreak now at 7,475 confirmed cases and 3,605 deaths, community preparedness in public gathering spaces remains important.

Development Alert continues supporting health awareness in community settings such as markets and trading centers.

Our messages emphasize hygiene, early reporting, responsible information sharing and seeking professional care when serious illness occurs.

We work with local leaders and community representatives to make information understandable and relevant to traders and customers.

We also promote the use of handwashing facilities where available and encourage market communities to maintain clean shared spaces.

Misinformation is another important concern. Traders often interact with people from several villages and can unintentionally spread rumors from one location to another.

We therefore encourage market leaders and community members to rely on verified public-health information.

Our activities also discourage stigma against people from affected areas.

Trade and livelihoods should continue as safely as possible while communities follow appropriate public-health guidance.

WHO's response includes community engagement, surveillance and infection prevention and control, all of which require cooperation beyond hospitals.

By taking health education into everyday economic spaces, Development Alert helps make preparedness part of ordinary community life.
