Dear Donor,
Contact tracing remains a central component of Ebola control because identifying and monitoring people who may have been exposed can help interrupt transmission.
The latest ECDC update reports that 87.6% of identified contacts are currently under follow-up in affected DRC provinces. The DRC has recorded 7,475 confirmed cases and 3,605 deaths as of 16 September.
Development Alert continues helping communities understand the purpose of contact tracing and why cooperation with trained health teams matters.
Some families may initially fear contact monitoring because of misinformation or stigma. Our community engagement activities seek to explain that monitoring is a protective public-health measure designed to identify illness early.
We encourage communities to provide accurate information to trained response personnel when asked about household contacts, recent movements or possible exposure.
Our community volunteers and local leaders can also help explain the importance of following health guidance during the monitoring period.
Development Alert does not replace professional contact-tracing teams. Instead, our work focuses on community awareness, communication and mobilization so that formal response measures can function more effectively.
We also recognize the importance of confidentiality, dignity and respectful treatment.
People under monitoring should not automatically be treated as infected or blamed for an outbreak. Supporting them respectfully can encourage continued cooperation.
Uganda's successful response demonstrates the value of strong contact-tracing systems. After 20 reported cases, Uganda completed the required 42-day period without a new confirmed case and formally ended the outbreak.
By helping communities understand contact tracing, we are helping turn a potentially frightening process into an organized public-health protection measure.
