We were recently received at the offices of the Gabriel Lewis Galindo Foundation whose mission is to promote and make changes to improve the quality of education in Panama. With Lic. Luz Graciela Alvarez, Lic. Clorislena Cañizales and members of our board got to know our work and to discuss opportunities to work hand by hand for the benefit of those children. As a result of this visit we will be planning soon, hearing health tour sponsored by Gabriel Lewis Galindo Foundation, to benefit more than 400 children of Gabriel Lewis Galindo School in the community of Las Trancas.

First Tour of Hearing and Dental Health 2016
In collaboration with the Kiwanis Club Las Perlas, more than 50 volunteers included otolaryngologists, speech pathologists, dentists and people of great heart, we could provide free hearing and dental exams to more than 100 children in the community of Nueva Arenosa in La Chorrera. Also we gave an educational talk about hearing health through the School for Parents. In this way we started the year bringing health to those in need. Thanks to all who came together to make this possible.

This year, the Baby Fair trade show had less noise and more Health.
For the fourth consecutive year, we provided valuable information about the importance of hearing care for the Baby Fair held in Atlapa from 15 to 17 January. In this way we ensure that more children have the opportunity to become the Hearing Screening, screening test to assess hearing loss. This year also was held within the fair # Solo1Minuto of Silence, to educate about the importance of protecting hearing the noise. Thanks to Expo Events for the space we yield every year to participate and thanks to our dear volunteers who supported us.

Cochlear Implant INTERNATIONAL DAY FEBRUARY 25
This day we honor Dr. Graeme Clark, creator of this wonderful invention that has already helped thousands of people. The cochlear implant is a device that transforms acoustic signals into electrical signals that stimulate the auditory nerve, allowing people to listen implanted. It has an internal component that is placed through surgery and an external component that is used in the head. It may be unilateral or bilateral and can be used by children and adults. After cochlear implant placement come a long period of oral rehabilitation to teach patients to talk. Thanks to the Lopez Family Foundation to Children's Hospital, Panama City. and the Children's Hospital Los Angeles for making possible the February conference call, issued by Dr. Ali Strocker for the benefit of a select group of more than 20 speech therapists who attended. HEARING CARE IS NOT JUST FOR THE DEAF
When we talk about hearing health, not only are we referring to the treatment of hearing loss, but all the conditions that may affect your sense of hearing temporarily or permanently. The common ear infection, excessive earwax or exposure to loud noises can cause you temporary hearing loss. Check your hearing and your children´s hearing at least once a year.
MY SON FAILED THE HEARING SCREENING!!
In fact this is common when performing examinations in public and private schools. When a child fails the test, there can be various reasons so the first step is to refer you to receive an ear wash and if necessary repeat the test or conduct additional testing. As data of interest: 35% of first graders in one of the schools visited during the month of September failed the test.

By allowing us to bring, besides hearing exams for their children, an educational conference for teachers and 9th graders. Widex professionals were accompanying us during this day of awareness where they provided valuable information for the audience
PANAM GENERATING LTD CONTINUES TO BRING HEARING HEALTH TO PUERTO CAIMITO
To complete the cycle hearing health for those children who failed the test in Phase I testing, the company sponsored Phase II which included washing ears and repeating auditory screening for the group of children who required it. We applaud this action of solidarity and responsibility .

OCTOBER –
EL VALLE CHILDREN COME FOR HEARING TESTS IN THE CITY.
Because sometimes a single round of hearing tests is not enough, we brought to our clinic in the City of Panama, children from El Valle de Anton requiring additional tests that are not mobile. We hope this second stage, will help in further improving their hearing health. Thanks to donors and volunteers who made it possible.

ENGAIGING AIP STUDENTS AND COLLEGE STUDENTS
This month the students of the American Academy of Panama, were presented with our projects to see if they join us to achieve them. They work closely with United Way to promote their talent and energy to various NGOs working for a better Panama. We also participating in “Ponte en Algo Fest” to attract university volunteers to make a difference in the lives of others.

A) KIDS AND FAMILY CENTER INCLUDES THE HEARING AS PART AS THEIR REQUIREMENTS
An example to follow; K & F Center, with who this month we signed a cooperation agreement, have decided to include in their requests for registration the Hearing Screening Test. In this way they ensure that the hearing of the little ones who attend, is in the best possible condition to start the development of their language. Congratulations on this tremendous initiative. Ah, furthermore thanks for donating the fabulous Light Table which will be used in our clinic for speech therapy.
B) COOPERATION AGREEMENT WITH VITAL VOICES OF PANAMA
We signed the cooperation agreement with Vital Voices, to provide the free hearing screening test for the babies of teenage mothers at the LasClaras Center. Thanks to its President Gisela Alvarez de Porras for her trust in our work.

THANKING DONORS, FRIENDS AND VOLUNTEERS
For the fourth year we celebrate with donors, volunteers and friends, the great job we have achieved which makes a difference in the lives of so many. Their support has enabled us to do more than 8,500 hearing tests to identify and provide treatment to children and poor adults who otherwise would not receive the "Gift of Sound". This year's event took place at the Marriott Hotel who donated us an event that was full of emotions and warmth. Thank you all!

We were happy to nominate Marsha Diaz as our volunteer of the year for the contest "Award 2015" runned by “Ponte en Algo” , which recognizes volunteers who have excelled in their work and rewards the winning organization. Marsha, thanks for all your support and passion for our cause.

GIFT OF SOUND: Adapting Hearing Aids!

Children and adults take care of their hearing with us. They recognize the importance of hearing screening. For babies, it is the ability to hear well for a healthy development of language. For adults it is safety to hear well to stay active and really connected to their work, family and social world.

At the end July, we had the opportunity to continue educating through the interview conducted by Channel 2-TVN where we also had the opportunity to perform hearing screening tests for adults . This also included the reknowned presenter Roland Sterling who sets example by checking his hearing

EDUCATING AT EXPO MOM FAIR
On the first weekend of August we were invited to participat at this fair in which we handed out thousands of educational flyers for moms to be. Our team as well as a group of enthusiastic volunteers offered valuable information to visitors. We hope all these people are now better informed and will take better care of their hearing.
HEARING AIDS AFFORDABLE FOR THOSE WITH HEARING LOSS
We have started the promotion of the recently received Starkey Hearing Aids which we are making available affordable for those who need them. We have in the past few month helped over ten patients and hope to keep helping many more.
HEARING SCREENING FOR ADULTS AT TOWERBANK’S HEALTH WEEK
Exams were offered for adults at Towerbank during their Health Week. Along with exams we offered an educational conference to better inform them about taking care of hearing and risks when exposed to excessive noise.
MORE KIDS BENEFIT FROM OUR HEARING HEALTH PROGARM
Kids at ABCnMe School received their hearing screening to ensure there are no hearing losses and that they can develop language on time. During our visit, kid’s mothers had a bake sale which funds will be donated in part to FOV to help us carry out our programs.
EXAMS FOR KIDS AT “Aldeas SOS”
Aldeas SOS in Panama shelters kids with no home and helps them get educated and become useful members of society. To contribute with this cause, in August we offered screening hearing to 40 kids and their guardians.
COMING SOON TO EL VALLE DE ANTON
On August 29 – We will go on a Hearing Screening Tour to El Valle, along with Hope Worldwide Foundation, were we will attend approximately 200 children from four different schools.
CHOCLEAR IMPLANT DAY -
Celebrating Cholear Implant Day we participated with "Puedo Oir Group" in an activity where families with implanted children had the opportunity to interact and share stories
EDUCATING PRE-SCHOOL TEACHERS
We offered a conference on Hearing Health, Screening and Early Detection for school teachers who work at our National Lottery Organization, pre-schools. Dr. Stella Rowley and Analida Pitty Ceballos from our FOV board presented two interesting conferences.
GOOD DEEDS DAY – FREE HUGS FOV
On March 15, for the 1st time ever, Panama participated in along with more than 70 other countries to celebrate "Goods Deed Day". Our foundation decided to participte to communicate with people in a very singular way : We gave away Free Hugs!! In this way we connected with many new people who now know about us and can use our services.
GRAND OPENING OF OUR CLINIC IN A NEW LOCATION
Looking to serve more conveniently our patients, on April, 2015 we inaugurated a new clinic located on Vía Fernández de Córdoba, which offers all the audiological exams and speech therapy, all under the same roof! Access to the new clinic is much easier as it is close to metro station and arriving, by bus, taxi or even walking is now possible.
INTERNATIONAL NOISE AWARENESS DAY
For the fourth consecutive year, Fundación Oír es Vivir, celebrated and promotioned in Panamá, the 20th version of International Noise Awareness Day which this year was on April 29th. This special day, which intends t raise concience and education in regards with noise induced hearing loos is celebrated with a minute of silence from 2:15pm to 2:16 pm. The support was massive ! Over 35 media companies including television, radio, outdoors, magazines and newspapers suppported this movement providing free advertising to invite all to hold 1 minute of silence. The hashtag #Solo1Minuto (#Only1Minute) became trending topic in Panama during the month of April, and many companies as well as personalities and individual demonstrated their support by sending us a selfie doing "shhhhhh".
Over 17 local celebrities along with 4 deaf kids, donated their image, time and efforts to be the face of our print and tv campaign. We also offered on that special day Free Hearing Screening at our clinic.
OUR MOBILE HEARING SCREENING PROGRAMA CONTINUES REACHING MANY
Along with the services we provide at our clinic, we have continued to take our team of professionals to public and private schools as well as to indigenous communities and rural areas to be able to extend the benefits of our hearing loss detection program. Here are some of the places we have been able to serve in the last 3 months:

FREE EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCES FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS
on May 6th, we offered the 7th version of our Free Educational Conferences for Teachers and Parents which aim to help them aquire knowledge on different thems related to hearing health, education and raising. On this occasion we invited 3 reknowned local professionals who contributed their time and knowledge with interesting themes on “Strategies to Deal with Bullying at School”, “Color a Language that Communicates”, “Proactivity, the Key to Personal Growth” and finally one conference about hearing health.
Attendance was a full house with over 100 participants all very please with the help Fundación Oír es Vivir provides with this educational events.
A NEW COCHLEAR IMPLANT FOR GABY
With the help of Fundación Sus Buenos Vecinos, a local and very reknowned Foundation lead by the biggest bank in Panamá, Banco General, we could give 8 year old Gaby an upgrade of her cochlear implant. This new version which is the Neptune – a water proof implant – will allow Gaby to also excel in what she loves best: To swim.
HEARING SCREENINGS WITH THE LIONS CLUB
On May 23, we were part of the annual Hearing Screening event held by Lions Club at Santo Tomas Hospital to benefit adults. In this occasion our team of fonoaudiologists participated had the help of students from the university UDELAS and worked along with many other institutions invited to provide exams and general information to the adult population that attended.
THE GIFT OF SOUND THROUGH HEARING AIDS
We are currently working on adapting hearing aids for several kids and young adults who have hearing loss. Among the first ones to receive this help we count Milagros a 2 year old girl and Natael, a 13 year old boy from the indigenous Emberá community. They both, along with around 6 or 7 more kids will start enjoying the gift of sound. This life changing action has been worked in conjunctions with Fundación Pro-Integración who provides, exams, adaptations and hearing aids to complete the circle of sound and benefit our patients !! It is the work of many who make this possible.
FREE EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE FOR PANDEPORTES
On May 27th we offered a free 1 hour conference about Hearing Health and Noise Protection to the employees at Pandeportes, our national entity that promotes sports. The intention behind this service is to alert them all in respect with hearing care.
YOUR VOTE COUNTS – COMPETING FOR A CASH PRIZE
We have been actively participating in the month of May to collect as many votes as posible for our Foundation in order to be able to win one of the cash prices offered by Fundación Sus Buenos Vecinos – from Banco General – to the 29 local foundations that raise the most votes among their clients. We have organized a well motivated task force that with the help of volunteers is looking for votes in malls, universities, companies and with friends and family. We hope our efforts is worth one of the prices, as we need it so bad to keep on working to take hearing health to those who need it the most in Panama.
