Early Hearing Detection and Intervention is not usually done on all newborns in Panama. The Fundacion Oir es Vivir aims to do hearing detection in orphanages, child care centers, pre-school, and children to age six. In capturing hearing problems at an early age, and doing the appropriate intervention, such as the use of a hearing aid the child can lead a normal academic and behavioral progress, and become productive in his/her life. Quality of life improved!
A child born deaf cannot develop the spoken language. By identifying hearing loss before the age of 5, the child can use a hearing aid and be rehabilitated to obtain the spoken language. Cost of hearing aids makes it prohibited for the great majority. We will establish a hearing aid bank to solve this problem for hundreds of children and their family. Education, quality of life will be the ultimate benefits! Our goal is to identify hearing problem early in life, ny doing hearing screenings.
We are creating awareness by community education of the invisible disability known as deafness. The Project is currently performing hearing detection in orphanages, day care centers and schools to capture children with hearing disabilities, as this is not usually done at birth. Implementation of hearing aids is the next step, together with speech rehabilitation.
The long term effects is to have a new generation of healthier, better educated and productive citizens, who will avoid the poverty lane. Benefits of early hearing detection and intervention is of great magnitude, as we will diminish the financial strain to family and society which globally affect millions of people. According to the CDC 1-4 of 1000 newborns are born deaf.
