Project Update:
Since the launch of the borehole project in Araromi community on September 29, 2022, the initiative has continued to serve the water needs of the community.
In our conversations with members of the community and their leaders, access to clean water has significantly improved the overall hygiene and sanitation conditions within the community. With the borehole project in place, the community now has access to a safe and reliable water source, reducing the prevalence of water-related illnesses and enhancing the overall health of the residents enabling them to maintain personal hygiene, wash their clothes and utensils properly, and prepare meals in a more sanitary environment.
In addition to the health benefits, the consistent availability of clean water has also brought about positive socio-economic changes in the Araromi community. The residents, particularly women and children who typically bear the burden of fetching water, now have more time and energy to invest in other activities.
Community Ownership:
Recognizing the importance of long-term sustainability, the Adara Foundation team facilitated a discussion with the community on the concept of community ownership and maintenance of the borehole project. Through this engagement, an agreement was reached for members of the community to contribute token amounts towards a maintenance fund. This fund covers general repairs, fueling the generator, and other necessary expenses.
Community members have wholeheartedly embraced their role in maintaining and sustaining the borehole project, demonstrating a deep sense of ownership and commitment. This enthusiastic ownership is exemplified by their active participation in the management of the project, including the allocation of funds collected for maintenance purposes. Notably, community members have utilized these funds to take responsibility for repairing electrical components of the pumping machine system whenever necessary. Furthermore, they have shown remarkable dedication by promptly replacing the pumping machine when needed, ensuring the uninterrupted functionality of the borehole and securing its long-term sustainability.
Next Steps:
Building on the success of the borehole project in the Araromi community, Adara Foundation is actively engaging with new communities in the wider Ajeromi-Ifelodun area to establish similar water projects. Negotiations are underway with these communities to identify suitable locations for new boreholes and dispensary points.
The Foundation aims to replicate the positive impact witnessed in Araromi by providing access to clean water to more underserved communities. By collaborating with local vendors and leveraging the experience gained from previous projects, the Foundation seeks to implement sustainable water solutions that will improve the quality of life for many more community members.
Through ongoing partnerships and community engagement, Adara Foundation is committed to its mission of empowering communities by addressing their basic needs and fostering sustainable development.
