This project will provide clean water and sanitary facilities for a community in Ajegunle, Nigeria's most notorious slum. Funds will support the construction of two boreholes and four blocks of modern latrines in Araromi, in Ajegunle; providing more than 5000 residents broader access to potable water and hygienic modern latrines. The goal is to reduce incidences of water, sanitation and hygiene-related diseases like cholera, typhoid and hepatitis among the very low income residents.
Residents of Araromi rely on limited public boreholes that are reliant on sporadic supply of electricity. Limitation of clean water sources means long lines at boreholes, and that women and girls, who are often responsible for these tasks, are taken away from livelihood activities and their education. Public toilets in the area are in a very poor state of repair and lack effective waste disposal systems. The dilapidated state of toilets increase open defecation and contaminate the ecosystem.
Adara will construct two boreholes and four toilet stalls that would address the challenge of poor access to water and sanitary facilities. Through stakeholder engagement activities, a water and sanitation committee would be formed and members would be trained and oriented to have longer term responsibility and oversight for management and maintenance of the community assets.
The construction of potable water and sustainable sanitary facilities is anticipated to have the following long-term impact: - Provide some very basic human needs for up to 5000 people in the Araromi community - Decrease incidences of water, sanitation and hygiene related diseases in the area Decrease open defecation and environmental pollution and Improve standards of life for people in the community.
