5th Year Anniversary
By Victoria Lanier | Executive Director
Recorder Students
As we embark on our 5th Year Anniversary, we are excited to see our school communities growing and our reach expanding in Los Angeles. Our students are thriving – as demonstrated in their increased musical knowledge, performance, growing self-esteem and motivation - and teachers and parents are sharing how invaluable the music education program is. "Learning guitar has improved my daughter's concentration," shares an ETM-LA Partner School parent, while another shared that music has had both a "social and developmental impact" on their child.
The summer was a busy time as well - we piloted our first Summer Strings program at the Castelar Elementary School and made updates to our curriculum. We also held an intensive week-long Teaching Artist Institute for our teaching artists and interns - led by experts in the field - with workshops on lesson planning, conducting, working with special needs children, vocal and choral teaching, and other pertinent topics.
We are grateful for your continued support to expand Education Through Music-Los Angeles to two new schools last year – Norwood & Carson Gore Elementary (formerly Pio Pico Span). This year ETM-LA will add an additional 10th public partner school, expanding our reach to over 2,500 schoolchildren. We look forward to an exciting year ahead!

We are grateful for your continued support and want to share how your donation has been put to work! As the school year winds down, we reflect on the tremendous growth of our students this past year. Over 2,000 students gained deeper knowledge and increased skills on their instruments and proudly showcased their skills during their year-end concerts. Castelar Elementary School's graduating 5th graders now boast higher percentages of students interested in Middle School Orchestra/Band, while 100% of St. Sebastian School's graduating 8th graders are being accepted into high schools. Our partner schools embraced professional development workshops this past semester, and teaching artists demonstrated visible growth as music educators through creative lesson planning and their students' successful performances. Also with your support, we expanded to two new partner public schools - Pio Pico Span and Norwood Elementary Schools.
As the Los Angeles Unified School District tragically plans to eliminate 100% of all arts instruction in elementary public schools by 2012, beginning with 50% next year, ETM-LA is committed to working alongside our communities and school principals to restore music as part of every child's well-rounded education.
We thank you for your dedication to giving at-risk youth equitable opportunities for their future!

We want to take the time to thank you for your ongoing commitment to nurturing the growth and well-being of underserved Los Angeles children. Thanks to your support, 2010 is off to a great start: ETM-LA brought comprehensive music instruction to a new partner school - Pio Pico Elementary this January, and our partner schools wrapped up 2009 with a series of joyful holiday concerts.
ETM-LA continues to provide ongoing yearlong music instruction to over 2,000 children. As March is Music in Our Schools Month, ETM-LA has also been busy with the following:
* Our recorder students at Rio Vista Elementary performed at their school/PTA meeting
* Our partner school Castelar Elementary choir students performed at the USC Choir Festival
* Music students from partner school St. Sebastian attended Buckley School's Romeo & Juliet
* Booker White, Head Music Copyist at Disney Studios visited partner school Nativity.
Together, we can impact the lives of these kids and our community through quality music education, one note at a time.
