Give In-School Music Classes to Los Angeles Youth

As summer approaches, we want to share how your support of Education Through Music-Los Angeles has enriched the lives of our kids this school year!    In our 5^th year anniversary, approximately 3,000 children received music instruction, and our students’ lives and communities are blossoming.  Here are some words directly from ETM-LA student, Megan, and her mother, Sophia:

For 10-year old, Megan, she cherishes the music classes she receives every week as a 5^th grader. We asked her to share why she loves learning music, and this is what she had to say:

Music helps me express my feelings, and I look forward to music class every week!  I love learning the violin, and find that music helps me in other areas, like math. For instance, we’re learning musical intervals, and I have to add notes together.  Having to read music and see what key we’re in helps with reading.

I don’t often get a lot of chances to play in front of people, so I feel proud getting to perform.  I’d love to be a professional singer some day.  My favorite singers are Kesha and Katy Perry, and I love trying to figure out the notes on my violin. 

Megan’s mother, Sophia shared:

Megan is more positive, and it has brought her out of her shell.  She used to be extremely shy, and now she’s more comfortable speaking in front of people and has helped with social skills. Music is a place for her that she can always turn to.

Our students are not only achieving in music, but also showing stronger development in “all areas” and in their “focus and concentration” (ETM-LA partner classroom teacher).  Come join us at our end-of-the year concerts if you’re in Los Angeles!  We are grateful for your ongoing support and partnership to give at-risk youth quality in-school music education!

We are grateful for your support to keep music in our schools!  As March is Music in Our Schools month, Education Through Music-LA has drummed up support by showcasing our students’ musical growth while building bridges between communities across Los Angeles and our nation.

On March 10th, ETM-LA students joined their voices with millions across the nation in the World's Largest Concert, hosted by the National Association for Music Education (MENC). At precisely 10 am PST, ETM-LA students and teachers from Castelar and Stephen Foster Elementary Schools sang and played in time with the nation in a simultaneous performance of music with the theme - “music lasts a lifetime”.

Then in April, Education Through Music-LA will commemorate its 5th anniversary by hosting its first-ever Music Unites the World Festival. Bringing together children from all of our partner schools, such communities from South Gate to Sylmar will be represented in an exuberant day of musical traditions and learning. Professional musical guests will lend their talents and their ears to our students as Castelar Elementary in Chinatown plays host to students, families and community leaders. Culminating in a concert en masse, this day is truly going to be a celebration of all the people and communities that have made ETM-LA's last five years a success.
