Conquering the world - one "media" at a time

By Jaya Chandrayan | Executive- Donor Relations

The MediaArts Lab is a natural extension of Agastya’s multisensory approach to learning. It supports teachers, training them to use technology to make teaching aids and conduct research. Students are taught to use digital cameras, video cameras, computers, sound recorders and more. They produce movies on social concerns, make pamphlets and posters to raise awareness, and learn tools for social activism at the local level. Overall, the Centre is a tool of empowerment, pushing children to make a positive difference in the society.

Furthermore, Agastya’s iCommunity project falls under the direction of the MediaArts Lab, teaching digital literacy to village students who otherwise have no access to computers or the Internet. They learn enough to at least understand what these tools are and the basics of how to use them.

For the month of November, the MediaArts Lab reached 676 students across Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Brief Overview of the activities; November 2017:

  1. Dhwani: This month the children briefly learned about the different video angles. They also ideated and wrote stories and began the process of making a storyboard.
  2. Abhivyakti: Children gained knowledge about pinhole cameras and it’s working. Additionally, they acquired hands-on experience of making the pinhole cameras.
  3. Animation: The process began with making a flipbook on various topics. The children moved on to writing a story for animation and learning the process of stop motion animation.
  4. Audio: The children were taught the role of audio in storytelling. With diverse story ideas in mind, the children recorded suitable background sounds. Now, they have moved a step forward by writing scripts for radio.
  5. Storybook: Having read and heard various stories through our library program, children began writing their own stories. These ideas are now being transformed into storybooks that are being created by the children themselves.

iCommunity:

This month the children were introduced to topics such as Microsoft Office, text typing, waste management, Likhita, Kitchen garden, Bio- Data form, and many more such fascinating concepts.

New Learning:

The children gained exposure to the Scratch Program, where they are learning how to create their very own interactive stories and animations.
