Empowering Rural Children through Media Literacy

1. Summer camps:
- Summer camps with engaging digital and hands-on media activities were held during the months of April and May.
- Children from 16 schools were a part of the summer camp.

2. Refresher training for instructors
- The month-long training was held in June and began with a review of the past year's activities and productions.
- Immersive activities such as interactive photo walks, captivating screenings, and hands-on workshops on photo stories and stop-motion animation were integral components of the training.
3. Workbook redesign
Our redesigned workbook for the media program showcases a vibrant transformation, incorporating newer activities that align seamlessly with the curriculum, fostering interactivity and elevating the learning experience for both instructors and students.

4. Productions and Aha! Katha
- Over 160 productions were created by children in the first year of the program, including videos, photo stories and storybooks.
- A select few of these will be featured in the publication Aha! Katha. The selections have been compiled and the design process of the book is underway. It is expected to be completed by the 3rd week of August 2023.
5. Impact Assessment Framework
- A framework to assess the impact of the MediaArts program has been designed. The framework has been designed to capture both the quantitative and qualitative impact of the program on children.
- As a part of the quantitative assessment, surveys will be administered to children on 3 occasions-pre-intervention, mid-intervention and post-intervention.
- As a part of the qualitative assessment, in-depth and structured interviews of the students will be conducted by the instructors.
- The assessments will map variances in key criteria including expression, communication, storytelling, documentation, using tools and creating.

6. Kala Kootami
- Kala Kootamifair was conducted by the MediaArts team at the OperationVasantha centre in Nulukunta village, district, Andhra Pradesh.
- We conceptualised and created 4 jumbo media-related models which were introduced at the fair for the first time.
- 226 children and 20 community members from 8 nearby villages visited the fair.

Another cohort of children from 5 schools around the Agastya Campus Creativity Lab began their journey into the world of media this quarter. The highlights from this quarter include:
School sessions:
- The Cohort II, which began in December, had 203 unique children and 688 exposures from the schools L. Krishnapuram, Redlapalli, Sivaramapuram, Dandikuppam, and Royal School.
- Classes for Cohort I students and Cohort II students ran concurrently in December. The completion and improvement of the final productions was the primary objective of the sessions.
- 108 children from Cohort I schools in Kuppiganipalli, Kalavanchi, Yamiganipalli, and Kamasamudram received 652 exposures. These children created 45+ productions. Aha! Katha shall compile the productions.
- In addition to our regularly scheduled programs, we encouraged children for daylong visits to our lab. We were able to connect with 52 schools and 1,837 unique children. In this quarter, there were about 3,674 exposures.
Kalakootami:
- Kalakootami was organized by the MediaArts team at Zilla Parishad High School, Balla, Andhra Pradesh. Children from schools in Kenchanaballa, Aniganur, Singasamudram and Balla, who took part in the MediaArts program last year attended the fair. Science corners were included in the event for the first time, along with Media, Art and Library activities.
- 2000+ children, 170 Young Instructors along with 96 teachers, and a few community members at the fair.

A new cohort of children from 4 schools around the Agastya Campus Creativity Lab began the journey into the world of media this quarter.The second year of the program began in July 2022 and will be completed by March 2023. The highlights from this quarter include:
SchoolSessions
- Before the school sessions began, an annual plan was prepared by the instructors in July, which included the addition of new activities and some modification to the existing curriculum.
- There were 108 unique children and 1164 exposures from four schools in Kuppiganipalli, Kalavanchi, Yamiganipalli and Kamasamudram for the first cohort that started in August.
- By the first week of September, the children completed the introduction sessions and pre-production. Production of final films, storybooks and audio began during the final week of the same month.
- There were several outreach sessions conducted for children who could not visit the campus using MediaKits.
Kalakootami
- A Kalakootami fair was organized in September at the Zilla Parishad High School in Settepalli.Children presented photographs and storybooks that they had created.They expressed their joy and excitement at being able to share their work with their peers, teachers and community members.
- Through the one-day exhibition we were able to reach 35 Young Instructor Leaders, 397 children and over 30 teachers.

Training and Skill-Building:
- A training session was organized for the instructors on how to shoot videos using agimbal. They also learnt advanced editing and colour grading on Adobe Premiere Pro. from Mr.Muthukrishnan and Mr. Bhoopathi, professional videographers and editors from Chennai.
- On the 19th of August the MediaArts team celebrated World Photography Day with a photo scavenger hunt. The participants were other instructors from the Agastya campus who took part in the event with gusto. At the end of the day, they receiveda printed copy of the photographs they had clicked.
