Great News! One trainee graduated!!

Though there have been struggles due to the lockdowns, we have graduated a student!

Lawrence successfully graduated during the month of June 2021! Lawrence, one of our best students, overcame many challenges including having to drop out of formal education in Primary Seven due to family financial difficulties in paying school dues. He is one out of the three youth who came from Nwoya district, Lungulu Sub County, Panokrach parish and was the the first to successfully comple the course.

He joined our Motor Driving course and completed on the 6^th June 2021 having met the requirements as he was examined by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) and obtained a Class B driving Permit.

Lawrence plans to operate a Pick-up vehicle to help transport farm produce from his district to the main business centre of Gulu City. The lockdown due to Covid 19 has not allowed him to currently operate. Through our routine follow-up phone calls, he has confirmed doing serious garden works as he waits for the lockdown to be lifted.

Work progress

Our Learn to Earn! Trades school training project has not lost track but is being delayed by the Covid 19 lockdown as schooling time is lost but we continue to follow our trainees.

The Micro project number two for ‘’Help Our Ship Come in’’ was funded and we await the delivery of the consignment of the refurbished tools and equipment to be supplied by the Christian of UK through Tools With A Mission (TWAM), which is due anytime in July 2021 as mentioned by the TWAM team in Uganda.

We held an orientation meeting with CARE International, an organization that intends to patner with us through bringing and supporting youth to our school in a five year project.

COVID Relief - Micro project

A COVID 19 micro project is due to be submitted to help support our trainees,tutors and their families before they resume studies after a tough lockdown here in Uganda.

The July Bonus Day of 2021
Follow up the date: 14^th July 2021. The July Bonus Day is one of the GlobalGiving fundraising campaign due to fall on the indicated date where all donations from $100 and above will be matched as below:
$100 - $499 on donation match at 15%
$500 - $749 on donation match at 30%
$750 - $1,000 on donationmatch at 50%
A USD400,000 matching funds will be available and we are hopeful that the donations from this campaign will keep all our efforts going until the end of 2021 as the lockdown rages on.

Part 1: GENERAL INFORMATION

Executive summary

Covid 19 has troubled every sector of the world economy not to mention the education sector in which our vocational training school belongs. With a target to train 90 youth in 2 years 2019 - 2020, our plan has not been achieved as a result of the pandemic. With lockdown instituted by the government of Uganda and others, the idleness, gambling rate, prostitution or formation of organized groups of street gangs on the good side of the pandemic came down but with pain on the side of income to feed the families.

It has stagnated our skilling activities in 2020 but finally the lockdown were lifted and we resumed training in March 2021. We have not reach our target to train 90 youth in 2 years 2019 - 2020, but now in progress to acheive the number in our project document. The lockdown instituted by the government of Uganda had saved the situation for the formation of organized groups of street gangs, group of idlers, gamblers and prostitution but brought in a lot of resource constraints as the pandemic made it difficult for families to raise food and money to sustain their homes. We re-opened on 15th March 2021 and enroled 36 youth, but only 20 have reported at shool.

Four of the trainees' parents paid quarter of the tuition fees with five donation made through GlobalGiving Foundation platform making a gross amount of USD355.24 for this project while for our microprojects all receipts and disbursements were reported accordingly. The expenses made on this project was USD360.03.

On a sad note, two out of the thirteen trainees (females) could report back to complete studies as they were reported engaged in early marriages while one boy was already busy working with private enterprenuers in his career as a builder though he had not completed the building and concrete practice (BCP) he was studying.

Explanation: March, April and May 2021 allowances to four tutors were paid in record time.

1.2: Progress towards Objectives

1.2.1 Objective 1: To provide skills training to 90 youth with at least 60% females, in different skills trade mentioned with 13 females and 7 males absorbed at the training institutions that reopened in March 2021. We lost three of our 2020 enrolled trainees in early marriages and voluntary abscornment.

1.2.2 Objective 2: To provide partial educational scholarships to 90 youth in five skills: 15 trainees were granted.

We received 14 donations during this period of reporting with a gross amount of USD355.24 from two monthly donors one new donor and one other longtime donor who search for our project through the google search. A USD339.64 was disbursed within this period of report and received in our bank account in ealier donations of USD66.91 and USD272.73 in May 2021.

1.2.3 Objective 3: To procure tools & equipment, and materials for students training.    We made some procurement as there was need to meet our planned actions during and post covid-19 time. We procured items for the hair dressers, tailoring and construction.

1.3:0 Project continuations

1.3. 1 The post Covid 19 operations is difficult to express though the existing trainees provide a good chance as they have kept in touch with the administrators of the institution. Tools with a Mission (TWAM) UK have sent communications of a planned delivery in June 2021 and we continue to wait while CARE International Uganda – Gulu office have also maintained their position to support our operations in 2021 by sponsoring youths in their groups in Bardege-Layibi Division one of our project site.

1.3.2 Main activities planned for June, July and Aug 2021

Project specific Objective 1: To provide vocational skills to 90 youth from Gulu district.

Activities: Training for term 2, conduct monitoring of activities, register for examinations, number of announcement and community visits.

Project Specific Objective 2: To provide educational scholarship for skills training to 90 youth.

Activity: provide vocational skills training

Activities: Maintain 15 trainees on partial scholarship beneficiaries and make payment for them.

Outputs: Number of beneficiaries identified and number of youth receiving the partial scholarship: 15.

Project Specific Objective 3: To procure tools & equipment, and materials for students training.

Activity: Education and training

Activities: Procurement of tools, equipment and materials acquired

Outputs: Number of tools, equipment and materials acquired. 0 megaphone, 2 material, assorted food items and cleaning items were bought.

Project Specific Objective 4: To pay Tutor’s allowances for the 3 months

Part 2: OTHER INFORMATION

2.1: Participation

a. We expect the 20 youth of term one 2021 to come back and complete their six months training in September 2021 and also the 15 new trainees to be brought by CARE international. We shall make a submit the thrid Microproject for supporting receiving the tools and equipments from TWAM if the confirm delivery time.

2.3: Gender Equity

a. Gender issues remain a paramount concept in every aspect of our project and shall remain at 60:40.

2.4: Child Centeredness and Rights Based Approaches

a. We shall resume and take into consideration the approach and use some of the literatures on GGF to upgrade our approaches.

2.5: Challenges, Lessons Learnt and dissemination

a. Successful and productive partnership continues to exist between GGF, TWAM, CARE International and FHF, Gulu City Local Government.

b. We learned a lot of information from Marc of ReachOutCameroon.org during a mentoring session for 95 minutes with several details and guides that's making us progress well on the GG Reward.

c. CARE International have confirmed their interest to sponsor trainees in a five years' project to be supported by the Austrian Development Cooperation.

d. Tools with a Mission (TWAM) UK have confirmed receiving funds for the shipment of the tools and equiment and expect to receive the second-hand refurbished tool and equipment in June 2021.

2.6: Emerging Advocacy Issues:

a. No participation in any advocacy due prolonged lockdown but will participate when a chance rise.

2.7: Organizational Changes:

a. This ’’Learn to Earn! Trades training in Gulu, Uganda project’’ continues to shine among the youth in the project site.

b. The Board of Trustees have remained the same, while a new person was enlisted to the Board of Directors, new Principal Tutor recruited, 1 new staff recruited and management structures continued as normal.

c. Our website hosting and subscription plan remain active as we are able to pay for it timely.

d. Facebook and twitter publicity became active with a foreign supporter due to GGF name on FHF.

e. Staffs allowances were paid upto date that is upto end of May 2021.

2.8: Other Comments:

Our Multistakeholders appraoch to partnership with GGF, CARE International and a new partner like Tools with a Mission (TWAM) is likely to position us into self-sustainable status.

Part 1: GENERAL INFORMATION

Executive summary

2020 is a year worth remmbering for both the good and bad things that happened to the global development world. We submitted three projects, two micro projects, succeeded in raising funds from two of the microproject with one being fully funded - Thanks to our donors and GlobalGiving. On the other side Covid 19 troubled every sector of the world economy not sparing the education sector in which our vocational training school belongs. With a target to train 90 youth in 2 years 2019 - 2020, our plan was robbed by the pandemic. The lockdown instituted by the government kept our operations minimally low. We could not enroll, train or support our youth because of the lockdown until it was eased for some sector that was when we reached out to 75% of our 13 youth who we had enrolled in early 2020 to know their status and how Covid-19 is affecting them.

The megaphone bought with funds received under the microporject No:47760 to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and do a deep clean-up of the school continued to keep our people in the community safe as the Tutor of Construction on a volunteer basis made 40 more awareness appearances in 10 trading centres reaching out to 2,106 people of which 1,500 are females and 606 males attracted to listen to the Covid 19 messages / talk by the Tutor who uses his bicycle to move from one place to another during his publicity program with the permission being granted by Gulu District Local Government Covid 19 TASK Force Committee headed by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC).

There were no funds received from parents and only funds raised during the GivingTuesday of 1st December 2020 and that for the two Microprojects were the funds that we have used during this period of report. Some expenses were reflected on the microprojects while those not captured are reported on in this report.

We consistently followed most of GlobalGiving activities to strengthen our operations and received USD2,424 overall during the tough year from four campaigns and from our two monthly donors.

The Good news is that the lockdown for training institutions has been lifted covering most of the classes as in February 2021 and we expect to resume normal operations from the 1st of March 2021.

1.2: Progress towards Objectives

1.2.1 Objective 1: To provide skills training to 90 youth with at least 60% females, in different skills trade mentioned. No progress realized as government continued with a lockdown on training institutions until 15th October 2020 when trainees in their final year are allowed to resume studies but our 13 trainees were not among as they were beginners. We shall resume studies in March 2021 based on the government school calendar annouced by the President.

1.2.2 Objective 2: To provide partial educational scholarships to 90 youth in five skills: No training took place due to Covid 19.

We received 2 donations during this period of reporting with a gross amount of USD63.42 from two donors one being our long time monthly donor and a new donor who search for our project through the google search. We received USD66.91for this project in our account on 23rd Dec 2020.

1.2.3 Objective 3: To procure tools & equipment, and materials for students training. We made some procurement as there was need to meet our planned actions during and post covid-19 time.

1.3:0 Project continuations

1.3. 1 The post Covid 19 operations is yet difficult to determine though the existing trainees provide a good chance as they have kept in touch with the administrators of the institution. We kept in contact with Tools with a Mission (TWAM) UK, CARE International Uganda – Gulu office who have expressed willingness to support our operations in 2021.

d. Tools with a Mission (TWAM) UK have confirmed willingness to support our project with some second refurbished tool and equipment in 2021. We have made three instalment payment for the shipment cost.

a. Our ’’Learn to Earn! This will finance in full the amount needed for shipping in the refubrished tools from TWAM-UK.

c. Our website subscription plan is active after we made payment and will remain active.

d. Facebook and twitter publicity became active with a foreign supporter due to GGF name on FHF and have remained active.

2.8: Other Comments:

We hope to get some of the necessary tools o stablise our operations and increase support to youth in the region.

We count it a successful year after acheiving one project being fully FUNDED on the GlobalGiving Platform with much appreciation to our donors and GlobalGiving Team who nurtured us to reach this level..
