Greetings from Pattaya in Thailand. In today’s update I want to thank you for your donations towards the “Help Sex workers in Thailand find a new life” project. We had a busy couple of months here in Pattaya with many different outreaches and in the last ten days we were able to take in three new women from the bars!
In February and March, we concentrated on Outreaches and together with some visiting teams invited many women to special parties that we arranged. On Valentine’s Day we had a team of 68 people that joined us in a special Outreach. We distributed Roses to all the women in the bars and invited them to a Valentines Party where we shared about what Tamar Center offers and what jobs they could get trained in when they joined Tamar. In March a Team from the UK sponsored our biggest Party so far - with a total of 108 women in attendance! We had nice games, good food, testimonies from women that have left prostitution behind and a challenge for the women to stop their work. At the end of the night one woman decided that she had had enough abuse in the brothel and asked us to help her get her things from the brothel. We went with her and since that day she is staying with us. There were many tears that night and one other woman joined us a couple of days later and right now we are talking to couple more that are thinking about coming out of prostitution. For many this is not an easy decision – they are often in debts to the bar owners or have a lot of pressure from their families to sent money home. But we continue to work and are hoping that for our next three-month long vocational Training that will start in May we will have at least 10 to 12 new women. Currently we have four that have already committed to join this program.
But it was not only outreach in the last months. Our Staff took part in the Asia Region Anti Trafficking Conference in Bangkok and enjoyed the networking and the input from many different sessions. While we as Management Team where there, four of our women joined a Leadership Training for a whole week in Bangkok as we are getting them ready to take over positions of Leadership within Tamar. It is nice to see that women that came only a couple of years ago out of the bars have changed so much that they are now willing to go forward and lead different areas of our work.
Thank you for your support of our work and for making it possible that we can reach out and invite many women that are trapped in the sex industry to come out and start a new life. Without you – this would not be possible!
