English Class happening again!
English Class happening again!

Hello everyone!

We are happy to share some recent updates with you. In the last months, many good things happened, and we are glad that we can report them to you. The biggest thing that happened was that all covid restrictions in Thailand were lifted on the 1st of July – which means that there is no quarantine anymore, people can travel, everything – sadly also the bars – is open again and most important schools are back to in person learning. It makes life a lot easier that things are going back to normal. Sadly, Covid is not gone, and the new variants are spreading especially through the schools. Thankfully all the cases that we had at Tamar were mild and people recovered fast.

Our Hair Salon in Soi 6 and our daily free English Classes are fully open again and many women make use of the opportunities. We have a very nice group of Volunteers with us and more coming in the next weeks as well, that make the classes attractive to the women. Now that the Bars have opened again, we notice that many of the women are new and have just arrived from the villages. They are coming to Pattaya due to pressure from their families. Many families are struggling financially during this time, and they see it as the only opportunity to send their daughters to Pattaya to make the needed money in the bars and brothels. It is very sad. Some of the really young women that we meet are shocked by the city, do not like their jobs in the bars but see no other way to earn money. During our Outreaches we try to build as many relationships as possible with the women, we tell them about our vocational training and invite them to our Center. Last month two women that joined our English Classes left the bars and moved in with us. They were a bit shy in the beginning but now are enjoying their work in the cardroom and are happy to be part of our community Yesterday and today we had more requests from women that also want to come and join us. We will interview them and hopefully they will be ready to step out of the bar life.

Our new building is making huge progress as well: all electric and internet cables are installed, ceilings are in, 50% of the windows are installed, tiles in the bathrooms are done and about half of the floor and stair tiles as well. As you can see in the pictures, it almost looks ready to move in. Currently the lights are getting installed, and the tiles are laid on the floors and wall painting will start shortly. Our contractor still plans to finish his work by the end of August, and we hope to have a soft opening around late October. A lot will depend on when the ordered furniture and other parts will arrive. It seems that due to the worldwide situation delivery times are longer than planned and some things are not available at all. We must stay flexible, change some things and hope that everything arrives on time. A big thank you again to everyone that helped make our new building a reality. We are so thankful for your support and can happily report that we are still within our planned budget!

On the 12th of August is Mother’s Day in Thailand – birthday of the Queen. For the first time we are planning a big outreach for this day and want to distribute more than three hundred gift bags with vouchers for our Hair Salon, cookies, gift items, beauty articles and more to Mothers that are currently separated from their children and working in the bars. Mother’s Day is very difficult for them as they are missing their families and we hope to bring them some joy and an invitation to join our vocational training where they can bring their children to stay with them.

If you are interested, you can follow us on Facebook and Instagram where we post almost daily more updates and pictures for you. Thank you for your continued support! We could not do our work without your help!

Valentine Outreach 2022
Valentine Outreach 2022

Hello everyone!

Greetings from Pattaya. Today I would like to update you about what has been going on in the last couple of months. First, we are totally excited that we were able to finish the fundraising for our new building! Thanks to many of you, we were able to raise the projected budget and the works are in full swing: electrical lines are in the walls and tested, fresh water and waste water pipes have been installed, all new walls are in and are plastered, in the bathrooms the first tiles are on the walls and much more. The company is working most days with sixteen people! Completion is still planned for summer and it looks like that we will stay in budget.

But the building is just one part of what is going on at Tamar Center: after an almost two-year break, we were able to open the Hair Salon again and we are also offering free English lessons for the bar girls in Soi 6 again. We received the first two Volunteers after Covid – one from the Netherlands and one from India. They are doing an excellent job in teaching the women English and building relationships with them.

Twice a week we are going again on bar outreach and inviting women to come to English Class, come to the Hair Salon and think about our three-month long vocational training that will start on the 13th of May. Sadly, many of the women that are interested in the vocational training are not willing to leave the bars. They are under enormous pressure to provide money for their families and see the bars as their only chance. There are hardly any Tourists here, but the women are hoping for a huge increase for the biggest festival in Thailand – Songkran – the Thai New Year – which will happen in the middle of April. We are still hoping for at least ten women to join our training and will continue our outreaches.

On the 14th of February we had a big Valentine Outreach where we were able to distribute more than four hundred gift bags. The women were surprised and very happy to receive the gifts, which included handmade jewelry, some cake from our bakery, food items and invitations for our vocational training. We are still following up with some of the women and trusting that some will join.

Our bakery also got the wonderful opportunity to cater coffee breaks for a weeklong conference with one hundred participants here in Pattaya. Every day they had to bake different cakes, prepare one hundred pieces, and deliver them to the Hotel. It went without any problems; the participants loved the cake, and we are very proud of our bakers for a job well done.

As you can see, things have picked up here and we are getting more back into the new normal. Thank you for your support and your help with all the work that is ongoing to help the bargirls in Pattaya.

Christmas Picture from all of us!
Christmas Picture from all of us!

Merry Christmas to everyone!

The Team from Tamar Center would like to wish you all Happy Holidays and a blessed new Year 2022! We are very thankful to you for your support and help throughout this year. Your gifts have made it possible for us to continue our outreaches and help to the bargirls in Pattaya. But let’s have a short look back on the year: 2021 was different from what we hoped and expected, and we all experienced many challenges throughout the year. It does not matter where in the world you where located, there have been many difficulties for us all. Sadly, it looks like, that at least the start of 2022 will be similar.

But in the last year, also many good things have happened, and I want to briefly highlight them from our work to you:

-          Purchase of the new Tamar Building – as of writing this Christmas news the new Building is 93% funded – which is just amazing

-          Tamar School – Since the start of online school in Thailand in June, we have set one of our buildings aside and everyday one staff member assists the Tamar children with their online schooling, logging on to the different classes, helping with worksheets, etc. This really helped the mothers out, as many of them struggled with the schoolwork of their children

-          Throughout the year, we continued our food distribution. From May onwards, we were not allowed to distribute to groups and so had to make one on one appointments with the women. In that way, we distributed around 100.000 meals in this year alone

-          Our vocational training was very limited due to the lockdowns and restrictions, but we still were able to train new women for our bakery and were able to keep all the women in our program.

-          Our counseling program was able to go much deeper with the women that are staying with us than they would have been able to normally. Due to the lockdowns, curfews, etc., there was a lot more time for the individual women to deal with deeper traumas from their past.

-          We were also able to do some renovation work in the buildings where our women are staying and also in our Outreach Center in Soi 6 where we replaced all the windows and painted again, ready for more outreaches in the new year.

As you can see, even though it was a challenging year, there have been many good things that have come out of it.  As this year draws to a close, we would like to challenge you to take some time out and reflect on all the good things that happened in 2021. We did that with our team here in Thailand and we were amazed by the extensive list of positive things that happened.

And so, we want to finish this year with wishing you a contemplative Christmas, nice holidays, good health, and rich blessings for the year 2022. We are very grateful here at Tamar for your help and support.

Merry Christmas!

Party on the new roof after purchase of Building
Party on the new roof after purchase of Building

Hello everyone!

Today’s update is packed full of great information. We had a very exciting month and September was amazing!  Thailand relaxed local travel restrictions on the 01st of September and we were able to make an appointment at the Land Office to legalize the purchase of our new building on the 3rd of September! The following week the Land Office was flooded and had to close because of heavy water damage. There was only this short window of time where they were open and we were able to get everything done.  Thank you for all your help and the donations from many people in our community that made the purchase of the building possible.

In the week following the purchase, we handed out the first renovation contracts and currently we have two different companies remodeling. One of them is working on installing a new roof on the combined buildings.  They were the first to actually connect the buildings because they started by breaking the dividing wall between our two buildings.  Once the new rooftop is up, they will also waterproof the current cement roof to stop the water leakage. Another company is working in our restaurant. Because we are planning to increase the size of the restaurant with a breakthrough into the new building, we had to move our service counter or we could not see the area in the new building.  Because our restaurant is currently still closed due to Covid-19 restrictions, we thought that this was the perfect time to complete this project.  We are also working with our architect on the final drawings where she will also do the overlay of the new water and electric lines.  We want several contractors to bid the project in the next couple of weeks.  It is really exciting to see this finally going forward after so many years in the making.

Otherwise, sadly not much else has changed. We still have a nightly curfew between 21.00 and 04.00 with many things still closed.  We hope that by the end of the year Thailand will be open again. Vaccinations in the country are finally picking up and everyone at Tamar has finally been able to receive a vaccine or decide against it. Children are still homeschooling, so we are continuing the “Tamar School” where everyday a Tamar Staff Member is making sure that the students follow the online school.    Because this has been going since May, the children are having more and more problems concentrating and sitting at home the whole day is not good for them. The government is predicting they will open schools up on the 1st of November, but we will see.

We are still giving out many food bags to women that have no income. The whole red-light industry has been closed since March and most people working there have received little help from the government. Our Soi 6 team is working five days per week: 3 days distributing the food and the other days contacting women to arrange it. This whole food distribution is complicated!  Based on government orders, we are not allowed to let the women wait in lines for food bags, so we must arrange individual appointments for each woman spaced in 15 minute intervals.   It is a long and slow process, but the joy in the faces of the women when they receive the food bags is worth it!

Thank you for following us and reading our updates!

Have a wonderful day from the Tamar Family.

Greetings from Tamar in Pattaya, Thailand.

We would like to say a big, heartfelt “Thank You” to all of you. Your support, especially during these challenging Covid-19 times is really appreciated and we could not continue our work without you all. Thank you for staying with us!

From the beginning of April, we had a strict “work from home” order but finally on the 30th of May we were able to come back to work again. We used the time at home to do some renovations in the buildings that we rent for our women. We painted, repaired, moved furniture sorted through all the things that accumulate when many women move in and out of our houses.

Now that we are back at work our biggest challenge is that schools are still closed, and we have no idea when schools will start up again. The children’s mothers must go to school every week, pick up tons of worksheets for the children and the children must do them themselves at home. You can imagine that that is not really working. As we have currently seven children staying with us that are in school, we thought hard about what to do. All the mothers really wanted to come back to work and for them to help their children with the schoolwork is also kind of impossible for most of them. So, we decided that for three days each week the children are coming to Tamar, and we have assigned one of our Staff to be the “Teacher” for them. They will do their worksheets and one of our Staff will be around to help answer questions etc. For the other two days we have hired somebody to play with the kids and keep them occupied with some fun activities. As nice as that is, we still hope that school will return soon to normal.

All our women are very happy to be back at work. They were really bored at home and stressed out with looking after their children for the whole time. (The Tamar Nursery had to be closed on orders from the Thai Government, same as all schools and educational facilities).  We are concentrating on working on new card designs and other projects for the coming Christmas season and we are also trying to find more customers for our bakery products. Our restaurant and hair salon are both still closed same as many things in Pattaya and without Tourists it is hard for businesses to survive. We are hoping that restrictions will be lifted soon. If you like you can check out our products with the link provided underneath.

Regarding our new building, we looked at different buildings that were on the market. Sadly, they all fell through: One was taken suddenly of the market and for the one that we really wanted the owners could not produce the ownership papers. The building next door that first looked at and prefer is still for sale, but the owner is still asking for a very unrealistic price. Currently we are in the process of making him two more offers with different payment terms for the building. We really would like to use this time when things are slow in Pattaya. It would be the ideal time to start the renovations… We will keep you posted what the owner will respond to us.

We also continue to help the needy, especially the bargirls with food supplies. We have stopped large scale distributions, as they are currently not allowed, but we follow up with the women that we know and the once that contact us and provide them with food and supplies that they need. We have also started to help some of the women that came out of prostitution through Tamar in the past. Many of them opened small businesses that are now struggling during this time. Just today one of these women came for a visit with her daughter to pick up some food help and some money for her to purchase the new school uniforms for her children.

But as a team we are doing well. We are very thankful that we are still all healthy and are able to continue our work. We again want to thank you for your help – without it, we could not continue to help the women in Pattaya. Thank you!
