Dear donors,

Wishing you all a Joyful and Prosperous New Year!

During this quarter the children in the special schools of Musiri Panchayath attended two special programmes.

The first one is the "Awareness program on good touch and bad touch". It was conducted in Musiri on 24.10.2018 for children from four special schools for child labourers and from three schools. It was jointly organised with the Rotary Club of Diamond City Queens. The program was conducted in the Government High School, Arangoor, Government High School, Alagarai, Girls' Higher Secondary School, Musiri. Special School Children from Arangoor, Manamedu, Alamarathupatti and Musiri participated in the program. Totally 1400 children were benefitted by the program.

Secondly, Children's Day was celebrated on 14th November in Kodiyampalayam Special School for Child Labourers. Children from the four special schools in Musiri panchayath  participated in the program. Competitions were conducted for the children and prizes were given. Pass Books opened in the names of  passed out students for the stipend amount given to the regular attendees of the special school were  handed over to the parents of the children. The function was presided by the Project Director, CHEERS, Trichy.

During the Children's day, Azhagu (name changed) met me and hesitantly asked, "Madam, can you please help me to become a policeman?". I can see the eagerness, dream and also the fear of future shadowing his eyes. I said,"Why not?". Azhagu's face brightened with happiness and after thanking me he ran to his friends to share his joy.

Dear donors, I can see your hearts warming towards Azhagu. And you would love to know about him, before supporting him. Azhagu's father is an agricultural coolie. His mother died when he was 9, affected by a viral fever. His father remarried a blind woman who could not take care of Azhagu and his elder brother. Azhagu's father could not take care of his two children. Azhagu's brother is working in a mechanic shop in a nearby town.

Azhagu dropped out of studies while in 7th standard. He was doing petty jobs when our special school teacher found him. Now he is staying in our caretaker's home and studying in our special school. He is 14 now and should be admitted in a regular school with hostel. Azhagu loves to play carrom board.

Children like Azhagu are given hope by New Life to continue their studies only because of the generous donations you make dear donors. Kindly support your favourite project by donating and by spreading words about the project to your near and dear ones. Your words carry weight. You can make a one time donation to support a child or can choose to make a monthly donation that assures your support to a child.

Your first new monthly donation  made during this giving season will be matched 100% by Global Giving and we have 4 more days to get this match.

Thanking you on behalf of our lovely children whose dreams are made a reality by you.

Indu
Indu

Dear Donors,

We are happy to share the happenings of the project with you.

Indu (name changed), is doing her 2nd year of undergraduation in English Literature.  She studied in our special school in 2012-13.  Indu narrates her story:"My family is very big and I have 8 siblings. My father is a drunkard. He gives no money for family expenses, so my mother has to work. With the meagre amount she brings as wages, it is very difficult to feed all the 11. It was then, New Life team saw me doing petty coolie works besides taking care of my siblings when my mother went out for work. They could convince my mother to send me to the special school, not by saying about the importance of education but by saying that I can get food regularly".  While saying this we can see the agony in her eyes.

While in special school she was motivated by the staff to study well and continue her education. They were much supportive and she joined the regular school in the year 2013. She completed her school studies. "I joined college with your support. Thank you New Life for financially supporting me for the third year consecutively. I was told that it is only through the donations they get from people like you. I am grateful to you donors for helping me and others like me".

On 25.6.18 a small get together was arranged in Thideer Nagar with the parents and the ex child labour children who were mainstreamed 3 years back. The purpose is to follow up the status of the children and to distribute the bank passbooks in the name of the children in which the stipend amount released was deposited.  We are happy that 87% of the children are continuing their studies.

18 children were benefitted on that day. One among them is Maha (name changed) who is an orphaned child.  She is now doing her higher secondary school education. This amount will help her to pay part of the fees.

You will be happy to know that19 children are mainstreamed to regular schools during this academic year 2018-19 and 35 more child labour children were admitted to our special schools.

During this quarter we received $1398 as donations and this will be used for the beneficiaries in 2019. We are also planning to conduct an awareness program on good touch and bad touch to the special school children in the coming quarter.

Dear Donors, we can do all these good deeds only with the support provided by you. We feel proud to see the children who were once upon a time coolies / labourers in different industries, now going to school or college. Some of them have grown up gracefully as engineers, master/under graduates, etc. You are a partner of our programme. Continue supporting these children shine. Kindly spread words about your favourite project to your like-minded friends and relatives. Let us create a child-labour free community together.

With regards and love

Dear Donors,

Share our joy on the event of the silver Jubilee completion of New Life. You have helped us generously in supporting 30 children to continue their journey of education during this proud moment. Children who were once child labourers and are now continuing their higher education were supported to the tune of $3134 (INR 210000/-).

These children’s levels of education vary from 9th standard to Under graduation. The norm for sanction that they should have gone to regular school for at least two years is overruled for 5 of these children as their family backgrounds are very pathetic. One of them is Selvam who is 13 years old. He is an orphan and is with aunt’s family. He is being beaten up by his uncle and aunt and is forced to sleep in the bus shelter at this young age. He is now admitted to a hostel by our efforts. His education and hostel expenses is approximately $300. Out of this $150 is being borne from the donations given by you. And for the remaining $150 we mobilized a local sponsor. She assured to support him in the next year too. We are grateful to you and other donors for being kind enough to be moral parents for such children.

You will be happy and proud to know that a boy from our Kajapet special school who was mainstreamed and wrote his 10th standard in March 2018 stood first among the other ex-child labour children in Trichy district with 75% of marks. We appreciate the special school teacher for laying a strong foundation.

Personally, I also share my joy of having received the “Community Excellence Award” on 31st March 2018 from the Rotary Club of Diamond City Queens. It is a great honour and this is made possible only with all your continued motivation to me. My gratitude to you and all our supporters, our board, our staff, our beneficiaries and all my well wishers.

With regards

Shamili
Shamili

Dear Donors,

It was a great pleasure to see the ex child labourers climb up the ladder of education. The pleasure is multi-fold when it is a girl. During the Women's Day Celebration on 10.03.2018 12 girl children were given education support. And 3 more boys were supported. Thank you dear donors for making it happen again.

Shamili (name changed) is from a down trodden family. Her parents are working as coolies in a brick kiln. The family's monthly income is $100 approximately.Shamili was found rearing goats by the special school teacher and was admitted to the special school. She is much interested in her studies. After two years she was mainstreamed in the nearby regular school. Now she is in 10th standard. She scores 70% marks. When asked what is her aim in life, she says "I want to be a doctor". When asked shy she says, "I want to serve those people who cannot afford to pay for their treatment."

During this quarter $1480 was received for the children from you. $2000 was spent to support the children and to take the children on an exposure trip to Pondicherry. The children visited the museum, the farm fest, the beach, Auroville, Aurobindo ashram, etc. The children were very happy to see the beautiful arrangement of flowers and vegetables in the farm fest, the auroville and other places.

Thank you dear donors for supporting our children, helping them to climb up their ladder and expanding their horizons. We request you to get ready to celebrate the power of the crowd in the Little by Little Matching Campaign(April 9 - 13th)! During this five-day campaign, GlobalGiving will match donations up to $50 at 50% with $50,000 in matching funds. There will be an additional 100% match on recurring donations and $3,000 in bonus prizes!
