Previously for our poor Dalit girls, escaping poverty through education was just an impossible dream. The cost of keeping their daughters in education is prohibitive for our families and most girls leave school early to work in menial jobs offering very low wages and no future.  Nandri has enabled our girls to continue in education, achieve promising careers and help financially support their poor families.

Nandri gives our girls the opportunity to continue to college through special Educational Loans. These loans to the mothers enable the families to meet the financial needs of the student until they graduate. The mothers undertake to pay back the loan over a period of time.  Many of our students have completed 3rd level degrees in many areas including medicine, engineering and computer studies.  To date we have supported 753 Dalit girls to complete their courses and achieve amazing success in their chosen careers.  Nandri has given them the chance to escape the cycle of poverty and fulfill their dreams of a brighter future for themselves and their families.

Agnes was a very intelligent and hard working student.  Her family are very poor, just about surviving on her dads daily wage as a coolie in the sugar cane field.  Agnes was faced with the prospect of having to find work to help support her family.  She was heartbroken to have to abandon her hopes of going to college and making a good career to enable her to help support her family.   Nandri gave the family an Educational Loan and supported her throughout her time in Agricultural College.  She achieved wonderful results in her degree and is now employed in an excellent job working for the Govenment.

Thank you for helping Nandri to continue offering Educational Loans to our young girls. With your support we continue to change their lives for the better every day.

Sharmi was only 6 months old when her mother passed away. Her father did not want to keep her as she would be a burden to him so he abandoned her, leaving her with her elderly maternal grandmother. Her grandmother was already caring for her severely disabled daughter and had hardly enough money to feed themselves. They struggled financially but did the best they could for the little girl left in their care.

During the COVID19 lockdown, their situation became dire. They had no income, no money for food and nowhere to turn for help. Feeding the family had become a daily struggle and there was no possibility of Sharmi remaining in education. Even though she is a bright and hard working student, she was destined to a life of low paid menial work and poverty. Sharmi’s Grandmother heard of Nandri and the work that our organisation is doing with poverty stricken mothers and their families. In desperation the three of them travelled 120 kms on a motorbike to meet Joe our director and ask for some vital food aid and financial help.

Nandri has agreed to support this empoverished family and Sharmi will be included in our sponsorship programme. With our help, Sharmi will be able to remain in education. Her future is now secure. With Nandri’s financial support, she can achieve anything she desires in life and continue on to 3rd level education and a fulfilling career of her choice, secure in the knowledge that Nandri will always be there to help.

Nandri has given hope and a promising future to this little family. With Sharmi’s education guaranteed, she will be able to financially support her grandmother and aunt when she graduates, so breaking the cycle of extreme poverty for this family.

We can only do our work with the help of you, our sponsors and donors. We would like to say a big “Nandri“ for making it possible to give Sharmi the promising future she deserves.

if you would like to help Nandri to help more children like Sharmi please donate.  Your generosity enables us to change lives.

Deepika
Deepika
This is the story of three amazing girls who, through their hard work and dedication to their education, have gone to College.  With Nandri's financial support and encouragement, they have succeeded academically, even though the odds were totally stacked against them.

Deepika is from the Triuvanamalai district. She is from an extremely poor family. Her father Mr Mathiyazhaganis works  as a poorly paid cooli and her mother Yasotha has no income.  Deepika was an excellent Student but because of the familys financial situation, Deepika could not continue her education and fulfill her dream to continue onto 3rd level education. Nandri offered its financial help from its Support for Higher Education program.  The funds that we collected through our GlobalGiving project "Educate 100 Dalit Girls" has directly  financed Deepikas continued education and she has been able to commence a degree in Bsc Agri. in Nammalvaar College.  She will have a promising career and secure future, thanks to your generous support and the help of Nandri.  Deepika is so grateful to be given this unbelievable opportunity and sends her deepest thanks to all of you who supported this project for making her dream come true.

Flarancia is an ambitious young woman from a very poor family backgroundHer father passed away and her Mother,  Arockiyammal is struggling to feed her family.  She is a cooli on a meagre wage working in agriculture. It is impossible for her mother to keep her children in education.  Thankfully with the financial support of Nandri, Flariancia  is presently in 2nd year college,  studying for a Bcom. degree. Nandri offered Flarancia help from its "Support for Higher Education program" from the funds that we collected through GlobalGiving and thanks to our Donors, she will have a financially secure future ahead of her.

Shali, a very bright and hard working student, belongs to a very poor family. Her father Vijayakumar is a lowly paid Gas Mechanic.  The family was struggling to survive financially but knew their bright daughter deserved the opportunity to continue on to 3rd level education.  They  approached Nandri for support and Nandri offered Shali  financial aid from its "Support for Higher Education program" from the funds that were donated  through the GlobalGiving project "Educate 100 Dalit Girls".  Shali is now in 1st year college doing the course of her dreams, B.tech Food processing and engineering. This would not have been a possibility for her if it wasnt for the generous support of our GlobalGiving donors.  Shali sends to each of you her very sincere thanks for helping her to achieve her goal - to become an engineer and to be able to support her family in the future.

This is just the story of  three girls out of hundreds that Nandri has been able to help to remain in education, complete degrees and go on to have well paid and fulfilling careers.  It is all thanks to you, our generous donors, who enable us to help these girls change the course of their lives.    All our girls are so grateful for your financial support and to be given the gift of education and a bright future.  From us at Nandri and on behalf of our children, a big "Nandri" to you all.

“It takes a village to raise a child”

Our children are our future and our mothers are the heart of Nandri, as mothers are the heart of many homes across the world.  If we support our mothers, in turn this enables them to provide for their children and Nandri enables them to keep them in education through financial loans.  It is a condition of our loans to the mothers, that they must keep their children in school.  We then encourage them to continue to third level education.

Nandri’s aim is to enable and empower our mothers,  to  help them start micro businesses and achieve goals in life that previously they would have thought impossible. Nandri also knows the importance of nurturing and educating the next generation, our children. Their growth,  happiness and development is intrinsic to their future success and that of our community.

In our villages,  traditionally mothers take on the greater role of raising the children. In some cases they are the sole earners in the household, left to care for the children as well as provide for them on meager salaries.

This is where Nandri becomes the supportive “village” that our families can depend on - a community built around helping our mothers to help themselves and each other too,  enabling them to provide the basic necessities their children need. These basic “needs” are things that we take for granted; food, shelter, sanitation and education.  Poverty strips our families of these necessities.

Nandri provides a supportive community, a “village” that helps our mothers and their families to escape the continuous circle of poverty.  Through financial loans and educational support, even on to 3rd level colleges, dreams are fulfilled,  ambitions are achieved and our village of Nandri creates a caring community which helps our mothers raise their children with hope of a better, brighter future.

Education during the COVID pandemic:

We have organised many special inniatives during this time to help our children continue to grow and learn.  These are some of the new projects we have developed:

  1. Special classes for 10th standard students
  2. Training the children in organic methods of agriculture
  3. Initiation of a new project for the students to plant 100000 palm seeds in our villages.

These new projects have helped keep the children busy while schools have been closed.  They have embraced them and have enjoyed creating their own micro gardens, growing vegetables for their families.

Jancy donates her first nurses salary to Nandri
Jancy donates her first nurses salary to Nandri

Last January at the Nandri Conference, in front of thousands of Nandri Mothers one very proud mum looked on as her daughter Jancy presented Nandri with a donation of her very first salary as a nurse. She thanked Nandri and explained that this was a token of her gratitude for all Nandri has done for her.

Jancy with Joe our director in India and Phelim our CEO

Jancy with Joe our director in India and Phelim our CEO

Jancys story began a few years previously when Joe, our director, heard of a bright and hard working student who was heartbroken as her family could no longer afford to keep her in education. Jancy is the oldest of 5 children, two of whom are handicapped. Her parents are daily wage earners, eeking out a meager living and barely managing to feed their family. After finishing school, Jancys dream was to study to become a nurse but for a girl from a poor Dalit family this was an impossible dream. She started working in a menial job, earning a pittance to help support her family. Joe stepped in and enrolled her in our higher education programme and with a loan from Nandri she was thrilled to be able to commence her studies in Nursing College.

Jancy has completed her degree and is working as a nurse in a Hospital in Delhi. She is now in a position to contribute to her family’s income and support her younger siblings in their education. This wonderful young lady is just one of hundreds of success stories - boys and girls whose lives have been transformed because of Nandri’s support and sponsorship through 3rd level education. Because of Nandri’s help these children have escaped from the inevitable poverty passed on from one disadvantaged generation to the next.

Nandri is proud to be helping to change the future of both our children and their families. Your genorosity makes our work possible and on behalf of all our children, we thank you.  "Nandri" from the bottom of our hearts.
