The Indian Government is attempting to improve the education system but still Dalit children, especially the girls, are faced with a constant struggle to get an education and to rise above the discrimination of Indian society. Dalits are looked upon as the lowest Caste in India and face constant discrimination at every stage of their lives. The girls are even discriminated against by their own men.
Dalit girls tend to marry very young and as a result have children early with all the associated health risks of giving birth at a young age. If they get work outside of the home, it will be menial, degrading and poorly paid work such as labouring in the fields, stone quarrying or prostitution. Dalits make up the majority of bonded and child labour in India. They are given the most unpleasant jobs such as latrine and sewer cleaning, grave digging and scavenging. Girls are also particularly vulnerable to sexual and physical abuse. According to UNICEF 2014 report, 11.9 million children between the ages of 6 and 13 are not in education in India. Even those who are lucky enough to attend school, usually only do so up to 5th grade.
With no education, these children have no hope for a better future. They and their families are stuck in a cycle of poverty and deprivation. Nandri with the help of our generous donors has changed the lives of Dalit children by providing loans to the families for their education and supporting them, not just up to secondary level but also through college and university. Through education Nandri has transformed their lives. In the past 3 months Nandri has helped 37 girls continue their education and work towards their dreams of a better future for them and their families.
Paska Mary is from Irudayapurum Village. Her parents are poorly paid workers in the sugarcane fields and have to constantly travel from village to village to find work. Paska has to mind her little brother and has no idea when her parents will return home to their little hut. She is an ambitious and studious girl, and worked hard to get to college to study for a degree in Computer Science. While in her 2nd year, due to financial problems in the family she had to give up her dream of a career in Computers and return home to get a menial job and look after her little brother. She was heartbroken.
Nandri heard of her plight and agreed to support her financially through her college course. She is now in her final year of her studies and when she graduates she will get a well paid job and be able to help her parents and support her little brother through his education. The lives of this family have been changed forever, thanks to Nandri and the support of our generous donors.
