Life changing Success stories from our girls

Nandri has engaged in a project in Tamil Nadu, and aims at providing elementary school and higher studies to some of the poorest girls in the area, namely the Dalit girls. Dalit families are considered the outcast of the Hindu society, and particularly girls are considered the lowest of all, sometimes regarded lower than animals. They are completely isolated from education, mainly because it is considered a waste of time and money, as the families are extremely poor due to lack of education, and therefore lack of employment and opportunities. Hence Nandri is in search of these girls and supports them for their higher education. Because for Nandri, there is no religion, no greed and no caste all people are same before God. The very existence of Nandri in India has made a huge different. We are proud to say that, till today Nandri has educated more than three thousand girls and particularly 800 Dalit girls. In society Nandri is known as Mother House to the homeless, orphan, widow and the marginalized. Therefore we are glad to share with you few girls life story that Nandri supported. Some of them have completed their course successfully and some of them are still doing their studies. All of them are grateful to Nandri for being with them as a pillar in their life.

The struggle of Dalit girls to get an education

Jenifer is from Thanibadi village, and her mother Metilda is working as a cook in the convent. Jenifer lost her father when she was too young and was struggling in life. Nandri learned their hard situation and supported them through its educational support and now she is doing her 1^st year of B Sc Nursing at Annai Velanganni College in Chennai.

Merlin is from Avoor village. Her father Anthony is working as a cook in the hotel and mother Francisca is a house wife. They are three children in the family. Merlin is doing her third year of Bsc MLT in Aarupadaveedu Medical College and Hospital at Pondicherry. Nandri supported her from its support for higher education program from the funds that we collected through GlobalGiving since the fees was too much for her to pay. And now she is happy to continue her studies.

Marshlin is from Michaelpuram village, Kallakurichi district. Her father Kulandaiyesu is working as a watchman, and her mother Susai Mary works as a coolie. Being middle-aged family and there is still a small part of additional help. With support from Nandri Marshlin got a chance to continue her studies in Ranganathan Architecture College at Coimbatore as a day Scholar. Now she is studying in 3^rd year B. Arch course with enthusiasm.

Sindhu is from Thirumalai village. This poor child has no parents, and fortunately she was adopted by one of Nandri mothers Banu who is already mother of four children. Sindhu is doing her second year of BBA and could not pay the fees on time, and so she was planning to discontinue her studies. On this condition when they approached Nandri for help, Nandri supported her from its higher education program from the funds that we collected through GlobalGiving and now the child started to continue her studies.

Success stories of our girls amazing achievements

Nandri has supported hundreds of our young girls and their families with financial loans so they can stay in school and fulfill their dreams of completing their education, achieving degrees and finding well paid jobs to help support their families. We also provide our families with small business loans. Here are some stories of how you have helped Nandri to change these girls lives.

Rebecca is from a very poor family who could not afford to pay for her to continue her education. She was a very hard working and promising student who dreamed of becoming a nurse. With Nandri’s financial help she completed school and is now with Nandri’s higher education support programme and with the help of a loan, is studying in Vellore to become a nurse.

Hishalini was an exceptional student in school but like many of our children, because she was from a very low income family, she could not continue her studies and go to college. Nandri offered financial support from their Higher Education Programme and now thanks to the loan she received, she is completing her first year of BA in English at Thenpallipattu.

Mary S. is from Vellore. She was a very bright and hard working student and had ambitions to become a nurse. Unfortunately as she was from a very poor family, this was just a dream. Both her parents were daily wage labourers and the family could not afford to keep her in education and it would be absolutely impossible for them to pay for 3rd level college. Nandri gave her parents a loan so she could continue on to Nursing College in Bangalore and now she is in the middle of studying for her Bsc in nursing in St Joseph’s College. When she completes her degree, she will be able to find a well paying job and will be able to support her impoverished parents in the future. One educational loan to this girl and her family has changed all their lives.

Recently we held a training workshop for our young people to teach them skills to enable them to start their own income generating projects and businesses and become self employed.

Sixty young people aged between 18 - 35 from families below the poverty line took part in various training programmes in agriculture and also learning technical skills in various industries and businesses. The aim of the project is to educate our young rural men and women in the skills needed to persue a self employed career in many areas of agriculture and also various self employed business schemes.

An important part of the training scheme is motivating these young people and encouraging them to believe in their own talents and abilities. We show them that with Nandri’s support and their own enthusiasm and skills that they can become self employed and earn a living to support themselves and help support their families. Knowing that Nandri will provide financial support loans and also the necessary education, these young people left with newly acquired skills and filled with enthusiasm to start their own small businesses.

Through both our Stay In Education programmes and our training programmes, we give our young people the education and skills to succeed in life and achieve wonderful careers. We could not do this work without your ongoing support. From all our young people at Nandri, we extend a big thanks you for enabling us to help our Nandri girls and their families.

Educational support changes our children's lives

Our success stories happily show how our educational loans change the lives of our children and their families. Here are two examples of how through support and education, Nandri has helped to fulfill the dreams and given hope for the future to these two Nandri families.

This young lady, M.S. is from Vellore. She was a very bright and hard working student and had ambitions to become a nurse. Unfortunately as she was from a very poor family, this was just a dream. Both here parents were daily wage labourers and the family could not afford to keep her in education and it would be absolutely impossible for them to pay for 3rd level college.

Nandri gave her parents a loan so she could continue on to Nursing College in Bangalore and now she is in the middle of studying for her Bsc in nursing in St Joseph’s College. When she completes her degree, she will be able to find a well payed job and will be able to support her impoverished parents in the future. One educational loan to this girl and her family, has changed all their lives.

This young father is from Iyyangunam Village. His wife, one of our Nandri mothers, tragically lost her life giving birth to their child. The father was left in an impossible position. He could not find work as he had no one to mind his two small children. Nandri mothers acted as an extended family to the bereaved father and helped to support him both financially and emotionally. Although they have so little themselves, they understood his struggles and managed to help this poor father who was in desperate need.

Nandri hearing of his plight, came to the fathers aid with financial support and we will continue to look after him and ensure he can afford to send his two children to school. As the children grow, we will help their father keep the children in education and encourage them to continue on to College to obtain a degree. With our help, there is a future and hope for this family. He and his two children will have our support and he will also always be a part of the extended Nandri family.
