Expanding Global Learning Through Storytelling

At SIMA Academy, we believe that documentary film is far more than a learning resource—it is a catalyst for civic participation, critical thinking, and informed action. By pairing award-winning social impact films with thoughtfully designed educational resources, we equip educators, institutions, and youth leaders with tools to transform powerful stories into meaningful dialogue and measurable community impact.

Today, SIMA Academy proudly serves 161,120 learners across 145 countries, providing access to more than 300 award-winning short documentary films accompanied by curriculum resources, leadership frameworks, and participatory lesson plans that advance media literacy, global citizenship, and cross-cultural understanding.

This quarter, we released our newest impact publication, A FIELD REPORT: How SIMA Academy is Turning Documentary Film into a Global Engine for Youth Civic Action. Drawing from educators, youth leaders, and partners around the world, the report explores how documentary storytelling is cultivating civic engagement, empathy, and leadership in classrooms and communities across the globe.
One of the year's most exciting milestones has been the launch of the SIMA Student Choice Award, a new addition to the annual SIMA Awards—now in its 15th year—that invites students to serve as jurors for this special category. In collaboration with United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), Millennium Campus Network, and the Global Campus of Human Rights, we distributed a global open call to students interested in evaluating some of the world's most impactful short documentaries. To date, the initiative has received hundreds of student jury applications, expanding opportunities for young people to engage deeply with socially conscious cinema while participating in an international awards process.
Our longstanding partnership with UNESCO APCEIU continues to bring global audiences together through educational screenings tied to United Nations international observance days. Together we hosted three international virtual events featuring SIMA Academy films:

International Day of Living Together in Peace (May 15): The Happiness Shop
World Environment Day (June 5): Lost World
World Rural Development Day (July 6): Homecoming

Each screening paired documentary storytelling with facilitated dialogue, creating opportunities for participants from around the world to reflect on issues of peacebuilding, environmental stewardship, and sustainable rural development.
We also launched an exciting collaboration with the Aspire Institute, providing up to 10,000 Aspire graduates with access to the SIMA Academy platform. Together, Aspire Institute and SIMA Academy are supporting limited-income and first-generation university students and recent graduates as they strengthen their leadership journeys. The pilot will help determine a broader rollout to Aspire's global network of emerging leaders.
Across Africa, we proudly renewed our partnership with LEAP Africa for a third consecutive year, onboarding the 2026 Leadership Accelerator cohort to SIMA Academy. As one of the continent's leading youth leadership organizations, LEAP Africa continues to integrate documentary storytelling into its leadership development programming, empowering a new generation of ethical, courageous, and innovative African changemakers.
Our growing global learning community also welcomed eight new SIMA Film Club Leaders, expanding opportunities for students and educators to facilitate documentary-centered dialogue using the SIMA Film Club model. These leaders will bring structured, discussion-based screenings into classrooms, campuses, and community spaces around the world. Learn more about Film Club.
To further strengthen educators' instructional resources, we developed The Discernment Protocol, a new lesson and inquiry framework designed to help learners navigate today's increasingly complex information landscape through media literacy skill building. Through structured inquiry and media analysis, the lesson encourages students to critically evaluate information, identify agendas in narrative construction, and practice thoughtful civic discourse. This quarter also saw the addition of 12 new award-winning documentaries from the 2026 SIMA Awards into the SIMA Academy collection. Together, these films explore an extraordinary breadth of global issues—bringing fresh perspectives and timely conversations into classrooms worldwide.
Throughout the season, we continued curating thematic collections that help educators integrate documentary storytelling into their classrooms. For World Press Freedom Day, we released a special playlist featuring powerful stories from Haiti, Kenya, and communities navigating revolution, displacement, and resistance. These films highlight the courage of journalists and grassroots media organizations working under extraordinary circumstances, reminding audiences that truth-telling remains an essential act of resilience, dignity, and democratic participation.
In celebration of Earth Month, we also introduced Material Worlds, a new educational playlist exploring secondhand clothing markets, textile labor, global supply chains, and the environmental costs hidden behind everyday consumer goods. The collection provides partners and educators with timely resources for Earth Day programming while encouraging learners to examine the global systems shaping material consumption and environmental justice.

Every new partnership, educator, student, and film added to SIMA Academy reflects our belief that powerful stories can cultivate informed, compassionate, and courageous global citizens. From Story to Impact: SIMA Academy

At SIMA Academy, we believe in the transformative power of documentaries to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of changemakers. Our award-winning short documentaries—globally sourced from the annual Social Impact Media Awards—bring media literacy, critical thinking, global citizenship, and cross-cultural understanding to learners worldwide through first-class, authentic storytelling.

Today, we proudly serve 161,120 learners across 145 countries.

Through a continually updated streaming platform, SIMA Academy offers over 300 award-winning short documentaries and Virtual Reality films. Titles are paired with high-quality learning resources and participatory, skill-building lesson plans—equipping educators, NGOs, and community leaders with a gold standard in social issue cinematic storytelling.

In March 2026, a slate of extraordinary new SIMA Finalists and Winners joined the platform, bringing urgent stories of resilience, justice, and radical hope into classrooms and communities worldwide.

We began the year by launching impactful partnerships with leading organizations such as MasterPeace, and AFS—expanding access to a global network of young leaders, grassroots organizations using art for change, and educators advancing innovative, transformative teaching practices.

At the same time, we strengthened ongoing collaborations with key strategic partners including UNESCO APCEIU, Institute for Humane Education, LEAP Africa, World Merit and the Millennium Campus Network. Through tailored content partnerships, these organizations are able to seamlessly integrate SIMA films into their programs, enriching learning experiences and supporting a thriving global community of changemakers.

To further amplify impact, we curated and shared special film playlists in celebration of key international days:

International Day of Education: 43 award-winning films exploring education’s role in advancing global peace, equity, and sustainable development. Stories like How Far Is Home highlight the transformative power of learning—within and beyond the classroom—and the communities expanding opportunity, resilience, and hope worldwide.
World Day of Social Justice: 27 award-winning films examining inequality, dignity, and pathways to change such as Angola, Do You Hear Us and Quipu: Calls For Justice. This collection centers lived experiences and spotlights solutions in action, demonstrating how storytelling can challenge systems and inspire meaningful progress.
International Women’s Day: 65 award-winning films spotlighting women who rise, reimagine, and rebuild. Stories such as Free to Care reflect courage, creativity, and leadership in shaping more just and inclusive communities.

The Power of Story in Action: SIMA Academy's December 2025 Impact Report

Selected from the finalists and winners of the annual Social Impact Media Awards, SIMA Academy offers a continually updated streaming platform showcasing over 280 award-winning short documentaries and Virtual Reality films. Each title is paired with learning resources and participatory, skill-building lesson plans—providing educators, NGOs, and community leaders with the gold standard in social issue cinematic storytelling.

This year, we renewed our collaboration with the Global Citizenship Foundation as members of the steering committee for ICTE 2025—the International Conference on Transformative Education—where more than 1,000 education leaders, policymakers, and practitioners from 70+ countries convened virtually. As part of our contribution, SIMA Changemaker Educator Winner joined the session Global Debates: GCED—More Rhetoric than Real Change?, and SIMA India SDG Challenge Winner delivered a catalytic keynote on Aesthetic Education.

In collaboration with UNESCO-APCEIU, more than 230 educators from around the world participated in the fifth edition of The SDG Challenge: Advancing Media and Information Literacy and Global Citizenship Education Through the Power of Film. This year’s cohort brought forward a new wave of creativity, commitment, and community impact—captured in the remarkable stories highlighted below.

A high school educator from Bhutan transformed his classroom into a hub of compassion by screening Tashi and The Monk to help students understand emotional well-being and empathy. Inspired by the film, learners created a Quiet Corner for mindfulness, launched a Peer Buddy System, and introduced one-minute meditation practices. The result: a kinder school culture where discipline shifted from punishment to understanding—and students became active practitioners of empathy.
A high school teacher from India turned film into fuel for sustainable action. After screening Dignity With Flowers, students tackled waste, pollution, and dignity of labor through composting projects, eco-friendly festival practices, and social inclusion campaigns.First Period sparked outdoor learning, kitchen gardens, school composting systems, and the formation of eco-clubs across three schools. Students became community change-makers, turning classrooms into catalysts for environmental renewal.
A high school professor in the Philippines empowered 200 students to link inner development with global action. Inspired by the films Tuning the Student Mind, Can’t Hide Me, & Taking Flight, learners launched #KindnessConnects, a digital campaign promoting empathy and addressing cyberbullying, and organized “Carolinian Hearts for Northern Cebu,” a relief drive for earthquake-affected communities. Through reflection, advocacy, and service, students learned that mindful leadership and compassion can spark real societal change.

Also in partnership with UNESCO-APCEIU, we continue to curate a virtual cinema series, transforming film into a platform for global dialogue. Across three thematic events, educators, journalists, youth, and community members came together to watch award-winning documentaries and engage in thoughtful discussions with filmmakers and experts:

Marking the International Day to Protect Education from Attack on September 9, APCEIU presented a special screening of the film A New Path, followed by a live online discussion with the film’s director. The film
To honor Word Food Day on October 16, APCEIU hosted a special screening of the film Green Gold?, which uncovers the hidden water struggles behind Chile’s booming avocado trade.

Through these virtual screenings, APCEIU fostered shared viewing experiences and deep dialogue around freedom of expression, children’s rights, and youth-led peacebuilding—encouraging empathy and inspiring concrete action.

And, to close an impactful 2025, we are proud to share that SIMA Academy has been honored as a Winner in “Education, Art & Culture: Literacy Program & Platform” at the 5th Annual Anthem Awards - marking the third consecutive year SIMA Academy has received this distinguished accolade.
