August 2025 Report - SIMA Academy

SIMA Academy Impact

At SIMA Academy, we believe in the transformative power of documentaries to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of changemakers. Our award-winning short documentaries—globally sourced from the annual Social Impact Media Awards—bring media literacy, critical thinking, global citizenship, and cross-cultural understanding to learners worldwide through first-class, authentic storytelling.

Today, we proudly serve 146,930 learners across 106 countries.

Selected from the finalists and winners of the annual Social Impact Media Awards, SIMA Academy offers a continually updated streaming platform showcasing over 250 award-winning short documentaries and Virtual Reality films. Each title is paired with learning resources and participatory, skill-building lesson plans—providing educators, NGOs, and community leaders with the gold standard in social issue cinematic storytelling.

This year, we renewed our partnership with LEAP Africa, granting 4,642 women from 50 African countries access to SIMA Academy through their Leadership Accelerator Programme. Participants, representing sectors from agriculture and finance to STEM, education, and NGOs, are integrating storytelling as a catalyst for leadership, advocacy, and social change.

In collaboration with UNESCO-APCEIU, over 230 educators worldwide joined the fifth edition of The SDG Challenge: Advancing Media Information Literacy and Global Citizenship Education Through the Power of Film. Through the course, participants use film to extend learning beyond the classroom, inspiring students to become media-literate, globally minded citizens and active contributors to a more equitable and sustainable world.

Also in partnership with UNESCO-APCEIU, we curated a virtual cinema series, transforming film into a platform for global dialogue. Across three thematic events, educators, journalists, youth, and community members came together to watch award-winning documentaries and engage in thoughtful discussions with filmmakers and experts:

  • To honor World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, APCEIU spotlighted the resilience of youth-led media in post-earthquake Haiti. The documentary Noise Runs follows a group of young activists who launch a radical newspaper to counter censorship, democratize information, and inspire social change. The event underscored the enduring importance of press freedom and community-driven journalism in holding power to account.
  •  Marking the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression on June 4th, APCEIU presented a moving portrayal of three Iraqi children navigating life amid conflict. The Future of Iraq offered a rare and intimate lens into the emotional landscapes of a generation growing up under the shadow of war. A post-screening discussion deepened reflection on the urgent need to safeguard children’s rights to peace, safety, and a hopeful future.
  •  For International Youth Day on August 12th, APCEIU showcased Barrio de Paz, a story of transformation in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where peace workers empower former gang members to rebuild their communities. The film celebrates the power of youth to become agents of peace when given mentorship and purpose, and the live dialogue session invited audiences to explore how leadership and opportunity can drive social renewal.

Through these virtual screenings, APCEIU fostered shared viewing experiences and deep dialogue around freedom of expression, children’s rights, and youth-led peacebuilding—encouraging empathy and inspiring concrete action.

Your support enables SIMA Academy to continue transforming witnesses into changemakers, ensuring that powerful stories reach the people who can carry them forward.

With warmth and gratitude,
The SIMA Academy Team
