We received a Short-toed snake eagle from a different district from Gujarat, the bird was already operated on by some organization who then abandoned it at a Forest Dept campsite, after which we were called to collect the bird.
Unfortunately for the eagle, the people who had treated him before didn't do a good job at all; in fact made the wing worse by suturing it wrongly, and it had become severely infected. Though there are a lot of small time groups and organizations that spring up during Uttarayan, with the best intentions, unfortunately they lack the proper facilities and infrastructure.
Avian treatment and physiology is not simple nor is it taught as a proper course yet, so when such birds get operated on, this tends to ruin their chances at going back to the wild. Always verify the work done by organizations or groups, make sure they have a legally approved VETERINARY DOCTOR not an assistant or livestock inspector, before handing wild animals or birds over to them.
To save this Eagle's life, our vets had to amputate the wing. This poor grounded bird will now spend the rest of its life in a Nature park or Zoo as an education animal. Till then it is doing well at our other centre before it can be shifted.
