STORY OF AFROZ:
Afroz is 36 and lives in the Israeli camp slum of Rangpuri Pahadi, Delhi with her husband Abid and six children. Five of her children are malnourished due to poor pre-natal care. This was primarily because she had managed all her deliveries at home and never visited a formal doctor for any advice. Having gotten to know that Afroz was pregnant for the sixth time the community health worker from Sukarya visited her and counseled both husband and wife about the need to have regular health checkups with a qualified doctor in order to ensure a complication-free during pregnancy. Initially both Afroz and her husband were hesitant in accepting the fact that a doctor's help was needed. However after multiple counseling sessions, they understood the risks and negative impacts on the lives of her and the new baby for not having medical supervision during the pregnancy. Following the sessions Afroz started visiting a doctor regularly and followed all her advice carefully. This led to her having a comfortable and healthy pregnancy without any complications she had faced earlier. As a result she gave birth to a healthy young boy in a hospital. Her son is completely healthy and well nourished because of the guidance from the Sukarya’s doctors and counselors. She now wishes that she had delivered all her children after getting advice from doctors and had healtheir children.
