Getting through Covid 19

SUKARYA COVID 19 RELIEF DRIVE

Sukrya's programs including the Urban Slum Health Actions (USHA) have been on hold due to the Covid-19 outbreak since mid March when the entire India was on a complete lockdown.

The lockdown since March and the loss of livelihood amidst social distancing rules have disproportionately affected our slum communities - migrant workers, daily wage-earners, the urban poor, and other vulnerable groups of women & children in tens of thousands. Hunger, lack of sanitary kits and loss of income to buy essentials have left most or all of them helpless.

The lockdown didn't end on May 31st as scheduled by the health department because the National Capital Region of Delhi that includes Gurgaon continue to be in the Red Zone. Sukarya is in the process to be working on the ground to provide COVID-19 relief and aid along with the preparation to resume its programs including USHA.

The task is monumental. The need is overwhelming. Even after the national initiatives like the PM Cares Fund and efforts from other grassroots non-profits, citizen groups, and civil society organizations, there is still a sizeable population living in our slum communities need to be fed and protected.

Rajwati: A success story

Conceiving and having a baby, is one of the most beautiful, natural and joyful experiences of life. However, this reality can be extremely difficult and life threatening for many women and children living in poor, remote and deprived regions. The story of Rajwati was no different. It was her fourth pregnancy and was a burden for her. Physically she was not ready for it.

Sukarya’s CHW counseled her and encouraged her to visit Sukarya’s Health Clinic for her ANC Checkup. At first she hesitated but later she agreed and visited Sukarya’s Health Clinic where she had access to all health tests under one roof like: Health Checkups (HB test, BP test, Height, Weight and Blood Group), Doctor’s consultation, free medicine and nutritional supplements.

She appreciated her visit to the health clinic and promised the CHW that she would visit the clinic every month regularly and she did. She got the benefit of Sukarya’s Health Services. She also attended Sukarya’s Sanitation Drive and Cooking Demonstration. She learnt how to cook nutritional food hygienically and how to keep her surrounding clean. She became a regular and dedicated beneficiary of sukarya. She improved her HB level by changing her food practices. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl and feels proud to have a girl child. She is very thankful to Sukarya for turning her unwanted pregnancy to a lifetime experience. Now she takes an active participation in Sukarya’s field activities and motivate other women to take care of their health.

Report XI: Peehu's Phenomenon

Peehu's phenomenon

In life, it just doesn’t get much happier than the arrival of a new baby girl. Same was the moment for Peehu’s parents when she came in to their life. But unfortunately the poor living condition of the slum in Surya Vihar coupled with challenging situation and surroundings of Aakash and Neha (Peehu’s parents), had an immediate impact on the health of Peehu.

Peehu’s poor health condition drew the attention of Sukarya's community health worker (CHO). In one of her scheduled home visits, the CHW found Peehu visibly malnourished and covered with dirt. On interacting with Peehu’s parents, the CHW found that the family was not able to give nutritious feeding to their daughter and were unaware of hygiene practices in daily life. After observing Peehu’s health condition, Sukarya’s CHW counseled her parents to visit Sukarya’s monthly health clinic for their daughter’s checkup.

When Peehu’s parents brought her to the health clinic, Peehu's weight was only 7.2 kg, which was a poor indicator of health, The doctor advised her mother that the under weight situation is not good for Peehu’s health and it is a clear symptom of malnourishment. The nutritionist counseled them about malnutrition as a critical issue in itself; lack of nutrition has repercussions in every sphere of child's development, as it stunts the physical as well as mental growth of child.

Initially, both Akash and Neha had an impression that the nutritious food would be very expensive but after attending the regular interventions of Sukarya they became aware of many low cost and easily available nutritious food items as Daliya, Seasonal fruits, pulses, mashed potatoes, milk etc. They started using them, adopted healthy living practices while focusing on Peehu’s hygiene.

And here is the good news!! On their latest visit Peehu had gained 1.2kg with her weight being at 8.6kg. Now she is out of danger zone and her weight is accurate in terms of BMI. Her parents are so happy and thankful to Sukarya’s efforts on awareness campaign on the importance of nutrition and health to sensitize children, their families and communities.
