I'm Linu, a Teach For India Fellow from the 2022 cohort, currently teaching a group of enthusiastic class 8 Students in Hyderabad. It has been a life-changing experience for both my Students and me. Initially, I faced challenges like limited resources, low motivation, and language barriers. However, I overcame these hurdles and witnessed significant academic improvement in my Students, especially in English. By implementing innovative teaching methods and engaging activities, I made learning fun while helping them grasp concepts. I'm proud of the progress we've made together.
During my journey as a Teach For India Fellow, one Student, Sakshi, stands out in my memory. Initially lacking confidence, she blossomed with personalized attention and consistent effort. Witnessing her growth in academic performance and newfound self-assurance brought me immense satisfaction and joy.
Behavioral improvements were also evident among my Students. Initially, some struggled with discipline, but by fostering relationships and creating a safe learning environment, they developed a sense of responsibility and accountability. Today, they are not only better behaved but also more engaged and enthusiastic learners.
Engagement with the Students' parents and communities played a vital role in the Teach For India experience. Working closely with parents, understanding their aspirations and challenges, and fostering trust through community engagement initiatives enhanced the overall learning experience for my Students.
Furthermore, my Students demonstrated significant growth in self-awareness, empathy, and understanding of India through the Student Vision Scale. Engaging activities and discussions prompted them to reflect on their beliefs, values, and experiences, fostering deeper self-understanding and empathy towards others. Overall, it has been a rewarding journey witnessing academic, behavioral, and personal growth among my Students, and building a positive community within the classroom.
My Students have demonstrated a strong curiosity in exploring India's diverse cultures, history, and social issues. Engaging in meaningful conversations and debates, they have shared their opinions and insights, fostering critical thinking and communication skills. I take pride in their progress on the Student Vision Scale, as it equips them to be well-rounded individuals and responsible citizens.
Throughout my journey, Teach For India and my Program Manager have been incredible sources of support. They provided essential resources, guidance, and constructive feedback, helping me overcome challenges and grow as a teacher and leader. I am grateful to be part of such a nurturing and supportive community.
As a teacher, my journey from January to March has been a period of growth and learning. I focused on building a positive classroom culture by implementing clear expectations, consistent enforcement of rules, and promoting Student participation and collaboration. Regular feedback helped engage Students and foster a culture of continuous learning. I incorporated Student interests into the curriculum, created a safe and inclusive environment, and built strong relationships with Students and families. While challenges with Student behavior arose, I tackled them through positive reinforcement strategies and collaborated with my Co-Fellow to develop effective classroom management strategies. Overall, it has been a rewarding experience of personal and professional development.
I implemented a Word Wall to enhance vocabulary and boost my Students' confidence in expressing their ideas. Additionally, the Book Review activity improved their reading, communication, and critical thinking skills. Group discussions and debates in Social Studies enhanced their understanding of society and current events. Writing practice in English improved their writing and self-expression. While challenges like Student disengagement may arise, I plan to overcome them through hands-on activities, group projects, and personalized support. Overall, the past months have provided valuable classroom experiences, and I am dedicated to fostering a positive and engaging learning environment for my Students' continued growth and success.
In year 2 of the Fellowship, I aim to establish a mentorship program connecting Students with community members or professionals in their field of interest. I will continue to build on existing initiatives while seeking new opportunities for growth, such as professional development and leadership roles. The ongoing "Be the Change Project" focuses on assigning qualified teachers to government schools to improve education quality. Inspired by Viktor Frankl's quote on personal change and Mahatma Gandhi's quote on being the change, I believe in developing myself to support others. As a teacher, I strive to inspire positive changes in my Students' lives and communities, promoting empathy, a growth mindset, and social justice. By being the change I wish to see, I aim to contribute to a better world, step by step.
