By Shreey | Teach for India Fellow, Cohort of 2023
In a significant stride towards environmental conservation, our students embarked on a project to eliminate electronic waste from their community. Teach India, a wing of The Times of India, facilitated the placement of an e-waste bin within our school premises. Students actively collected unwanted electronic waste from their communities, which was then dispatched for recycling every four weeks, contributing to reducing e-waste and instilled in our students a sense of responsibility towards sustainable living.
Reflecting on the successful initiatives and substantial growth experienced during my first year in the fellowship, I am eager to build on this momentum as I move into my second year. My primary focus will be to deepen the impact of our existing projects while exploring new opportunities to enhance student learning and community engagement.
Building on the success of the e-waste elimination project, I plan to expand our environmental sustainability efforts. Recognising the importance of environmental stewardship among our students, I intend to introduce a comprehensive recycling program beyond e-waste, encompassing paper, plastic, and other materials. Engaging students in regular clean-up drives and environmental awareness campaigns will also be a priority to foster a sense of responsibility towards our planet.
The WASH and cleanliness campaign initiated by our 6th-grade girls has highlighted the profound impact of student-led community initiatives. In my second year, I aim to empower more students to take leadership roles in similar campaigns. By providing workshops on publicspeaking, project management, and community mobilisation, I hope to equip our students with the skills necessary to become change agents in their communities.
My personal theory of change revolves around the transformative power of education regarding academic achievement and fostering holistic development among students. I believe that by creating a learning environment that encourages curiosity, resilience, and empathy, we can equip students with the tools they need to navigate life's challenges and contribute positively to society. This involves imparting knowledge and nurturing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and moral values. Through engaging teaching methodologies and a curriculum that reflects real-world issues, students can develop a deeper understanding of their role as global citizens and the impact they can have on their community and beyond.
