Temporary Home for Children in Argentina

The household assists children who suffered rights violation. For this reason, for more than 15 years we have been carrying out different proposals to promote the integration and development of young people in Argentina. Throughout this challenging term hampered by the virtual context, various activities were developed with youngsters who attend Colibríes; which will be detailed in the following paragraphs.

One of the activities was related to the theme “rights”. In May, a remarkable campaign was made about the Tehuel’s case, a trans boy missing. The children raised their voices demanding answers; they designed posters with the teacher’s help to wake up the community.

Furthermore, on June 2^nd an event was held in gratitude to the firefighter’s volunteer foundation which collaborates with Mensajeros. During this day, children embellished the establishment with paintings and balloons, but also a brainstorming space was created to debate the importance of these heroes in our society.

Finally, we received special visits from Laura Alonso, secretary of social inclusion of the nation, intendant from Almirante Brown Mariano Cascallares, the national congressman Federico Fagioli and the secretaries Barbara Miñán, Atilio Gari y Guillermo Antoniani. They walked through the household with our project leader Graciela Gilona and decided to sign an important agreement to support the feeding of more than 20 boys and girls, which covers most of their needs. In addition, this plan supported by nation funds will provide building improvements. These are brilliant news to guarantee the fulfillment of children’s rights.

This agreement added to the unwavering support from each of our donors allows us to keep working on promoting a glittering future for children. We have several goals to accomplish in the next semester that will be addressed in a future report.

Over the years, the Temporary Home “Colibríes” has been a containment and support space for children who went through complex situations during their childhood. For this reason, our professional team provides physical and psychological protection.

After a challenging 2020, from Mensajeros de la Paz we carried out the “Back to school” campaign, in which we were able to equip our children of Colibríes with new school supplies of very good quality so they can start classes with all the energy!

We decided to ask Graciela, the Director of Colibríes, about the feelings that this campaign left her, and she expressed excited: “I know the effort involved in a campaign of this magnitude, but it is well worth doing.” Likewise, she told us about how crucial it is that the children can have the possibility of choosing: “For children growing up away from the socio-affective nucleus to take care of them, these actions are really transcendent in the institutional sphere. You do not know how much impact a gesture of love has in their lives. Thank you a lot!”
