As volunteers in Mensajeros de la Paz, we have got to know and participate in the workshops carried out by this organization at the home in Longchamps.
Two workshops are organized in the house, both of them focused on art. On Mondays, the girls learn the art of Photography and on Fridays they do theater. Apart from the practical skills acquired, the two workshops seek to strengthen the bond among them and with their environment. At the end of the workshop, a photographic exhibition and a theater play are organized, so that people can get to know what the girls have done, as well as the house itself.
In order to interact with the girls adequately, one must always bear in mind that all of them are in the house because they are in need of guardianship. Many have gone through situations which are beyond our imagination, but at the same time they are just girls, with their tantrums, their ups and their downs.
Longchmaps is much more than just the workshops carried out there. It is the spirit of the girls, and their hugs and smiles when you arrive and when you leave, what makes this place unique.
Even though we hope we have contributed and helped these girls, at least slightly, the truth is that what we have gained from the experience, what we have learned and lived, is certainly unforgettable.
We would like to describe each of the workshops in more detail:
Photography workshop:
At the beginning of each session, a warm-up activity based on songs is organized, so that the girls can focus and get ready for the main activity.
Next, images and videos are used to explain the concept that they will later work with. This concept can be technical (such as how to take portraits, use the camera or add filters) but most of the times it is related to skills such as perseverance, team work, solidarity and many more.
Then, it’s time to take pictures. Since the age of the girls varied greatly, and so does their attention span, the pictures are taken in groups, so that they have a variety of roles (take the picture, be a model, compose the scene, etc.).
When a group considers they have finished their task, they can always use the remaning time to reflect of their pictures and show them to the volunteers, or to do some artistic work such as painting.
Theater workshop:
Similarly, a warm-up actitivy is carried out so as to get their attention. In this case, they are told a tale or short story. Next, some physical activities follow (stretching, breathing, relaxation, etc.), as well as some other activities involving their bodies that aim at building up their confidence with others.
Once this warm-up activity finishes, they start practising the choreographies that they will dance at the theater play, as well as the scenes themselves. 8-10 girls participate in each choreography. To rehearse the scenes, groups are formed so that the different roles can be practiced.
To finish, all the girls get together to report back on what they have felt during the session and to give their feedback on the play.
