Skilling underserved Youth for Livelihoods

Greetings of the day to all,

Hello everyone! My name is Monica (name changed), and I connected with Udayan Care 8 years ago. I remember that after completing my graduation, I was looking for a skill training course when I luckily came across a banner for Udayan Care’s Vinod Nagar IT Centre. I decided to pursue a 6-month diploma course in IT there. During my time at the center, I often volunteered to teach introductory course content to new students under the supervision of the IT trainer. My passion for training led me to seize my first job opportunity as an IT trainer at Udayan Care’s West Delhi IT Centre, where I worked dedicatedly for 1.5 years. Later, I decided to explore a career in HR, thanks to a strong lead from a friend. I interviewed for the talent acquisition team at Batra Hospitals, South Delhi—a renowned hospital—and got selected for the position. Today, I serve as Assistant Manager – HR at the same hospital, earning a competitive salary. Since my association with Udayan Care, I have remained an active member of the alumni network. I never miss a chance to visit nearby centers to hold sessions for current students, motivating them to attend classes diligently and seize their first job as a learning opportunity, even if the salary is modest at first. I deeply care about the placement of existing students, and I truly appreciate the efforts of Udayan Care’s IT Centre placement team. Recently, they organized an outstanding Campus Placement Drive at Govindpuri, South Delhi, which was a great success. The event aimed to mobilize numerous job vacancies for youth, allowing them to apply for various roles based on their interests and comfort, all under one roof. Over 280+ youth participated from Udayan Care’s 11 IT Centers located in Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad. This number includes 70 beneficiaries connected through Udayan Care’s After Care Outreach Program, Udayan Shalini Fellowship Program, and various NGOs and CBOs like Saathi Centre (ISST), Shanti Sahyog, Asem Library, and others.

13 recruiters from 7 companies, including Cogent E-Ser vices, Offshoot Agency Pvt Ltd., Velocity Xcelerator Pvt. Ltd., Germanium Technologies Ltd., Viamod Solution Pvt. Ltd., 3i Infotech Digital BPS Ltd, and Aerial Telecom Solution, conducted one-on-one interviews and typing tests for candidates who applied for backend positions. The well-structured event concluded with excellent results: 164 candidates were shortlisted for final interactions and documentation to join their jobs immediately, while 80 students were selected for the second round at their respective companies, where process managers will further interact with them. Following this super energetic drive, the training team continues to remain consistent in ensuring the holistic development of students through various activities. One of these initiatives is a series of internal competitions, which help nurture competitive skills in the youth while encouraging them to stay focused on learning. These events motivate students to put extra effort into practice, preparing them for future challenges. On 14th September 2024, the Udayan Care IT Centre team organized the 5th Typing Speed Competition for students enrolled in the Data Entry Operator course across 24 IT Centers. I was invited to attend as the guest of honor, along with my batchmate, Sachin (name changed). After a rigorous nomination process, 51 youth were selected to participate in the competition, which was held at Udayan Care’s head office. Students from our Mumbai, Vadodara, and Hyderabad IT Centers participated virtually. The competition was divided into six rounds. Gagan, from the Loni (GZB) IT Centre, successfully completed all levels and was declared the winner. Abhishek, from the Mumbai IT Centre, secured the 1st runner-up position, while Nikhil earned the 2nd runner-up spot. The top three winners were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals, along with gift vouchers. At the conclusion of the event, all participants received certificates of participation and shared positive feedback, particularly appreciating the opportunity to compete on such a platform. On the same day, I had the opportunity to interact with the lead person responsible for managing training and assessments for the Udayan Care IT Program. During our conversation, I learned that, apart from these internal competitions, they are continuously working to bring in resource persons who can conduct domain-specific sessions as well as financial literacy workshops. Recently, they collaborated with the Dhiraa Skilldev Foundation, a Mumbai-based non-profit organization dedicated to ad vancing inclusive growth through financial literacy and skilling opportunities. Ms. Priya (name changed), Co-Founder of Dhiraa Skilldev Foundation, who has 26 years of experience in Indian and global financial institutions, conducted a 1.5-hour structured financial literacy training session for 82 students from Udayan Care’s Jogeshwari (Mumbai) and Vadodara IT Centres. The session covered key topics such as personal finance management, budgeting, savings, investments, and protection against financial fraud. It was an interactive session where students asked several questions on the topics discussed, and the facilitator provided insightful answers, using real-life examples to enhance the students' understanding.

Udayan Care Information Technology Program report for GlobalGiving Jun’24

Greetings of the day to all,

Hello everyone! My name is Yashveer (Name changed), and I became part of Udayan Care two years ago when I learned about Udayan Care’s Dundahera IT Centre, which was established to provide training to the youth in IT courses free of charge. Since I moved from my village (Bihar) in Gurugram, I was continuously looking for a platform where I could learn computer courses. However, financial constraints became the major reason I could not pursue this, as I had to work to survive in a metro city. Working in an export house was not my cup of tea. I completed a 4-month training course called Data Entry Operator (DEO) at the Udayan Care IT Centre in Dundahera. This helped me secure a job opportunity at a company called Interface Microsystem Pvt Ltd. in Gurugram, Haryana. I have been continuously working at the same company, and this year, I got promoted to supervisor with a good salary hike. Although I am busy with my job, but I never miss the chance to visit my centre and help current students learn the topics required in my company. These small efforts have helped 18 students secure jobs at the same company where I work today.

During my recent visit to the centre, I learned that Udayan Care has expanded its program in Manesar, Gurugram, with the opening of its first Telecom courses training centre. On April 4th, the inauguration ceremony took place to formally open the Udayan Care Skill Development Training Centre in Gurugram, Manesar. This project is the first initiative to implement telecom courses like Mobile Repair, Broadband Technician, Customer Care Executive, Repair Centre, and Relationship Management, which are recognized by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). We aim to provide training to 140 youth at this centre, and in the first batch, we have successfully enrolled 42 youth in the listed courses. The inauguration ceremony concluded with a wonderful interaction between the students and the team from Ciena. On the same day, I met with Arpit Sir, the Regional Coordinator, who told me about Mercer Consulting India’s employees' volunteer session on ChatGPT and advanced Excel tricks, which took place at the Kasna, Greater Noida IT Centre. Mr. Bishwajeet led the session, guiding our centre students through a presentation with live examples. Following this, students were assigned tasks while volunteers supervised and assisted them in utilizing Excel formulas and AI tools.

Thirty students participated in this enriching session, finding it highly beneficial for their learning. They appreciated the volunteers' interactive approach to covering the topics, which aided in better comprehension among the youth. The structured two-hour session concluded with feedback, engaging activities, and a vote of thanks, notably delivered by a group of students who had prepared handmade thank-you cards for the volunteers. These volunteers generously devoted their time amidst their busy schedules to support our students, leaving a lasting impact on their educational journey.

As we discussed how corporate volunteering activities work as the icing on the cake to ensure the holistic development of students, the team of Udayan Care’s IT Centre program is continuously working to mobilize corporate volunteers to hold specific sessions to add quality to the training program. For example, while Mercer employees were involved with the Kasna Centre for the session, in the same week, 7 HCLTech employees conducted a session at our Noida Sec 80 Centre. During the session, the volunteers conducted group activities to create an environment that prepared the students for facing interview rounds. The feedback from the volunteers was overwhelmingly positive. They appreciated the opportunity to share their expertise and contribute to the career development of underserved community youth. It was a fulfilling experience for them, knowing their efforts are making a significant impact.
