Udayan Skilling & Livelihood Program Update

By Amrita Singh | Documentation Officer, Skilling & Livelihood

Menstrual Hygiene Day
Menstrual Hygiene Day

Greetings!

Hello everyone!

I am Amrita, and my journey with Udayan Care began in 2021 as a Social Work intern for my block placement, where I worked in the Advocacy Research and Training department for Aftercare Outreach Program Cohort-2. Inspired by the impactful work of the organization, I returned after graduation as a Soft Skills Trainer in the Skilling and Livelihood Program. After two enriching years of working closely with youth, I took up the role of Documentation Officer, which opened new opportunities for me to lead and represent our work.

On 28th May 2025, I had the privilege of leading a session on Menstrual Hygiene Day at the Nangloi Centre. Since menstruation is still surrounded by stigma, we aimed to create a safe and open space where young girls could freely discuss menstrual health and hygiene. I began by inviting participants to share their understanding of the menstrual cycle, and many confidently spoke about their knowledge and experiences. During the session, covered correct usage and disposal of sanitary products, safe menstrual hygiene practices, understanding the menstrual cycle, and addressing prevalent myths and misconceptions. Throughout, I ensured the environment was inclusive and interactive, enabling recipients to feel comfortable asking questions and sharing concerns. About 35 female recipients actively participated, engaging with enthusiasm and openness. This initiative not only enhanced their knowledge but also promoted confidence, awareness, and dignity, contributing significantly to the overall well-being and empowerment of these young women.

Another task I was aligned with was to lead the strategy for a centralized activity on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day. After a brainstorming session with regional coordinators and centre coordinators, we concluded that an event where students could present their business ideas would give them valuable insights into thinking like entrepreneurs. Keeping in mind our discussion on 20th July 2025, we successfully conducted “Shark Tank UC: Skill, Spark, Shark!”. From over 270 participants and 100+ ideas across centres, 12 finalist teams presented their business concepts to a panel of Sharks. What made the day even more special was our first-ever live multi-room broadcast across three locations—managed entirely without external technical support. The energy in the rooms was electric as students pitched their ideas with confidence, clarity, and purpose. Winners were felicitated with gift vouchers, but every participant walked away feeling like a champion and having Ms. Anshul (name changed), SPOC – HCL Foundation, with us as a special guest added great encouragement and motivation. For me personally, this event was a turning point it was not just about managing logistics, but about being part of a milestone moment that sparked entrepreneurial thinking among our youth.

Following this, another inspiring milestone was the Industrial Visit to ABB India Limited for 60 recipients from our Ballabhgarh Centre. The visit gave them first-hand exposure to manufacturing operations, engineering processes, workplace safety, and professional culture in a globally renowned company. The recipients found the visit extremely educational, connecting their classroom learning to real-world industry practices. Their enthusiasm and insightful reflections showed how such exposure builds confidence, career clarity, and industry readiness. As I accompanied them on this journey, I realised how critical it is to bridge the gap between skill training and workplace realities.

One such recipient, deeply motivated by this visit, aspired to work in a similar industry—and with dedication, Ashutosh (name changed), secured a job opportunity to begin his career as a Graduate Trainee at Avok Engineering Consulting & Contracting Pvt. Ltd. In his role, he supports project report coordination, assists in preparing salary sheets for employees, contributes to tender documentation, and gains practical experience across multiple functions. Witnessing his journey—from classroom training to industry exposure and finally stepping into the professional world—has been a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. It reflects how skill development, when coupled with the right opportunities and mentorship, can open doors to global-standard industries and transform lives. This success story is not just about one individual—it is about shaping a confident, industry-ready youth who represents the aspirations of a stronger, skilled India on the global stage.
