“Kodomo-no-Machi (Children’s Play City) Ishinomaki 2014” was held from 4 to 5 October, in shopping street and open spaces located in Ishinomaki, which is one of the towns recovering from the tsunami damage in Miyagi prefecture. Over 1,200 children and parents attended the event.
Kodomo-no-Machi Ishinomaki is the activity for children. Within this activity, they can build companies related to public organizations, shops or something, and then they can work there, earn money, and of course, they can hang out for shopping as well. Through such process, they also can make connections with other people, learn the town management system, and find their future vision. In addition to the activity, we held the street party that even adults can enjoy, due to that we had blocked off the road.
The kids worked with their eyes shining, as a fashion designer, a model, a photographer, a carpenter, a leather craftsman etc. In fact, some children working as shop owners had participated in the meeting to prepare this activity since five month before. During the event, they assigned tasks to other children, explained the contents, and sometimes recruited workers on the street.
They continued to improve their shop layout even within business hours, and sold their productions to customers eagerly. They had always got around with smile in order to make much better shops, much better time.
Originally, this activity has launched since 2 years ago, so this was the third time. A lot of students, including not only University students but also pupils of high schools and junior high schools, came to help us, in this time. Some of them had attended the preparation meeting before the event. It is certain that a young generation looking after children in the region has grown up, and they have been participating in this activity actively.
We would like to make an opportunity to reconstruct the local community and network which was destroyed by the big disaster, by means of this event organized by about 20 group’s collaboration.
