Strengthening Cross-Border Preparedness

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

The latest Ebola developments demonstrate why cross-border preparedness remains essential. WHO reports that the DRC outbreak has expanded to 62 health zones across seven provinces, with the newest affected area, Bulu Health Zone, located in Sud-Ubangi near international borders.

Although Uganda has successfully ended its 2026 Ebola outbreak, the continuing transmission in the DRC means vigilance remains important.

Development Alert continues supporting awareness and preparedness among communities whose lives and livelihoods connect Uganda and the DRC.

People cross borders for trade, family visits, education, employment and access to services. These movements are important to communities, but they also demonstrate why public-health preparedness must involve communication between neighboring areas.

Our activities promote early reporting, reliable health information, hygiene practices and cooperation with health authorities.

We engage local leaders, traders, transport workers, community volunteers and other groups that interact with people moving between communities.

We also encourage people to seek reliable information rather than stigmatizing travelers or people from affected areas. Public-health preparedness should protect communities without creating unnecessary fear or discrimination.

WHO specifically notes that informal crossing routes can facilitate virus exportation, importation and onward transmission and emphasizes stronger cross-border coordination, surveillance and preparedness.

Development Alert therefore considers cross-border communication an essential part of our preparedness work.

Uganda's successful response shows that sustained surveillance and coordinated action can interrupt transmission. WHO confirmed that Uganda completed the required 42-day period without a new confirmed case.

Our continued goal is to help ensure that the border is not a gap in community protection, but a point of stronger cooperation and early warning.
